Netflix’s April 2024 TV show lineup begins with the psychological thriller Ripley, with an eclectic cast and characters. Created by Steven Zaillian, Ripley is the filmmaker’s second work on television after his 2016 8-part miniseries, The Night Of. The Ripley TV series is set in the 1960s. It follows Tom Ripley, a grifter hired by a wealthy industrialist to convince his wayward son to return home. Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley
Irish actor Andrew Scott has given one of his best performances as Tom Ripley in the Netflix series Ripley. Cast as the title character, Scott breathes life into Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley character from her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Arriving in Italy, Tom Ripley is drawn into the lavish life of Dickie Greenleaf. Moving in with Greenleaf, Ripley soon desires a life like Greenleaf’s. Andrew Scott reinvents himself for the role, delivering a masterful and breathtaking performance. The Irish actor is known for his roles in movies such as Pride (2014), Spectre (2015), and All of Us Strangers (2023). Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf
Dickie Greenleaf is introduced as the wayward son of a wealthy New Year industrialist. Rather than be convinced to return home, he welcomed and introduced Tom Ripley into his home and life. Although unsuspecting of Ripley’s intentions, Dickie Greenleaf soon becomes the subject of an investigation. British actor and singer-songwriter Johnny Flynn plays the character of Dickie Greenleaf. No stranger to film and television, Johnny Flynn is known for his roles in Lovesick (2014-2018), Emma (2020), One Life (2023), and The Lovers (2023).
Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood
Although joining Ripley’s cast in a supporting role, American actress Dakota Fanning plays the character of Marge Sherwood. The character isn’t only a close friend of Dickie Greenleaf but a romantic interest/girlfriend. While everyone falls for Tom Ripley’s antics, Marge Sherwood quickly seems through them. Since Ripley befriended Dickie Greenleaf, Miss Sherwood has been skeptical about his true intentions. Dakota Fanning almost needs no introduction, with acting credits replete with big Box Office earners. Fanning is known for her movie roles in Man on Fire (2004), The Twilight Saga movies (2009-2012), and The Equalizer 3 (2023). Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles
English singer, songwriter, and actor Eliot Sumner also joins Ripley’s cast, playing the character of Freddie Miles. Like Marge Sherwood, Freddie Miles is also suspicious of Tom Ripley and all he represents. Freddie Miles is a close friend of Dickie Greenleaf. With his acting debut in 2001, Eliot Sumner starred in several film projects. However, Netflix Ripley is his television debut. Eliot Sumner is the fifth child of English musician Sting and the third child of actress and filmmaker Trudie Styler.
Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini
Italian actor Maurizio Lombardi also plays a major supporting role in Ripley as inspector Pietro Ravini. He’s put in charge of the case when Dickie Greenleaf goes missing and continues the investigation after his murdered body is found. Although unknown to most American film and television audiences, Maurizio Lombardi has worked extensively in the Italian film industry.
John Malkovich
American actor John Malkovich is also one of Ripley’s cast, playing an undisclosed character. In Ripley’s trailer, Malkovich’s character meets up with Tom Ripley, and one of their conversations is about Malkovich’s character’s admiration for the name Tom Ripley. This is obviously a nod to John Malkovich’s role in Liliana Cavani’s 2002 thriller movie Ripley’s Game. In Ripley’s Game, John Malkovich portrayed the character of Tom Ripley.
The veteran actor is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Besides John Malkovich, another notable face audiences see in Ripley is actor Bokeem Woodbine. His undisclosed character approaches Tom Ripley in a bar, and their conversation indicates he’s been searching for him.
