Ridley Scott Will Resurrect Maximus if Russell Crowe is Down for Gladiator Sequel

Alright.  This whole Alien:Covenant thing is going too far.  What is going on with Ridley Scott lately?  First the guy claims this week that he can do at least six more Alien films to which I responded that’s a horrible idea since we haven’t even seen Alien:Covenant yet.   Now we’re talking a Gladiator Sequel?  Let me just say right off the bat that Gladiator was hands down one of the best films I’ve ever seen in the theater.   Performances by everyone, but especially Joaquim Phoenix, were extraordinary.  And Scott did a phenomenal job of telling the story of Maximus’s fall from general only to rise again as Gladiator.  But a sequel?  I think this is where I draw the line.

“I know how to bring him back,” Scott said on 10 March, while at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. “I was having this talk with the studio – ‘but he’s dead’. But there is a way of bringing him back. Whether it will happen I don’t know. Gladiator was 2000, so Russell’s changed a little bit. He’s doing something right now but I’m trying to get him back down here.”

I think we can all agree that ever since The Martian brought Ridley Scott back to relevance we’ve been excited to see what he’s going to do.  All I’m saying is “one film at a time” dude.    While Scott has a perfectly legitimate reason to keep doing Alien films (he says he loves it) I just wonder if the quality will suffer.

But doing another Gladiator?  I just can’t see any scenario under which that movie will be nearly as good as the first.   The guy is dead!  Leave him be.
