MLB legend Willie Mays, affectionately known as the “Say Hey Kid,” passed away this Tuesday, as confirmed by the San Francisco Giants. 
Mays, aged 93, was widely regarded as one of baseball’s greatest players.
My father has passed away peacefully and among loved ones. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my broken heart for the unwavering love you have shown him over the years. You have been his life’s blood,
said his son Michael Mays.
Mays’ illustrious career began at the age of 20 with the New York Giants in 1951. He rose from playing in the Negro American League with the Birmingham Black Barons to becoming a cherished MLB star. Over his 23-season career, Mays hit an astounding 660 home runs and earned 12 Gold Gloves, underscoring his breathtaking talent.
The Catch That Defined a Legend
Mays’ iconic moment came during the 1954 World Series against the Cleveland Indians when he made an unforgettable over-the-shoulder catch, known famously as “The Catch.”
The mesmerizing skill of one of the most talented players ever to step on a baseball field was captured in that play,
remarked a sports commentator, highlighting how Mays chased down Vic Wertz’s fly ball deep into Polo Grounds’ centerfield and threw it back in a glistening display of athleticism.
Legacy Beyond Baseball
Mays was more than just raw talent; he left a profound mark on baseball’s history. Greg Johnson, Giants Chair, reflected, Willie Mays’ combination of tremendous talent, keen intellect, showmanship, and boundless joy set him apart.
Mays was also recognized beyond the diamond. In 2015, President Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of America’s highest honors.
