I feel like I wrote a lot today (see my little foray into shame and internal searching here), so I’m not feeling very chipper right now. You know who else isn’t feeling chipper? Eric. We’re meant to think that Sookie visits him in his hotel room after Godric’s death and then kisses him as he’s crying tears of blood. We’re meant to think this, but it’s all a dream.
Sookie wakes up in a car with Jason. The two of them (and Bill in a coffin in the back) are driving through Bon Temps. Total chaos reigns over the town. People are freaking out in the streets, chasing each other, jumping in front of cars, etc. Jason and Sookie notice that a couple has those black eyes.
After the credits, we see Maryann and Eggs building some sort of pyre in Sookie’s front lawn. Karl contributes with organs and feathers.
We see that Sam and Andy are holed up in a hotel. Andy returns with some supplies and tells Sam about the current state of the town. Sam tells Andy what Maryann is (basically an orgy-loving heart-cutter-outer).
Arlene calls from Merlotte’s, crying that the angry mob is after her too. Sam falls for her sob-fest and agrees to come to the bar.
Back at Bill’s house, Jason’s leaving a message the police station about the craziness. Sookie tells Bill (newly awakened from his coffin) that some bad sh*t is going down in Bon Temps. Mama Hoyt appears on the balconey, talking craziness and displaying black eyes. Hoyt and Jessica follow, explaining how Maryann and the town are after Sam. Mama Hoyt comes onto Jason (his reaction is freaking hilarious) and then goes to play the Wii like a crazy person. Sookie also learns that Maryann’s been squatting in her house. Jason wants to go off, guns a-blazing, to save the town. Bill and Sookie don’t agree, but Bill eventually relents. *Sigh* Jason’s so pretty. Sookie and Bill go off to find Tara.
Sam and Andy and a bottle of whiskey arrive at Merlotte’s. Arlene surfaces and then a crazy posse steps out of the darkness to encircle Sam and Andy. Andy fires his gun into the air, but Terry taks the gun from him. While the crazy people are laughing, Sam and Andy attempt to escape and end up trapped in the freezer. Terry sends one of the others to all Maryann to come by and pick up Sam.
Inside the freezer, Sam and Andy debate about what to do. They don’t want to kill their friends, but they’re trapped and they don’t know what to do.
At Lafayette’s house, Tara’s tied to a chair. Lettie Mae tries to help her, but Tara keeps acting crazy. Lettie Mae starts praying and Lafayette joins in. The two of them lament about how they each failed Tara as she talks about how someone is coming to kill them all. Creepy.
Bill and Sookie arrive at her house to find the weird pyre (or totem or offering or whatever). The house has been decorated with branches, dirt and candles and Sookie calls out for Tara. She gets a call from Lafayette who tells her to leave the house. Sookie grabs Bill to leave, but Maryann stops them. After the obligatory ‘what are you doing in my house?’and ‘this is my house!’, Maryann pins Sookie to the wall, allowing Sookie to gaze into Maryann’s memories (and see her chasing someone down as a maenad). Bill pulls her away and then bites into Maryann’s neck. Maryann’s totally into it but Bill starts to spit out black bile (presumably Maryann’s blood). Sookie somehow repels Maryann with some white light/electric shock that comes out of her hand. Both Sookie and Maryann wonder what the hell that was as Sookie and Bill leave the house.
Inside the freezer, Andy and Sam lament about what’s going on and what happened to Daphne.
Jason’s in the woods now, in a sleeveless t-shirt (OMG!) and loading up guns and chainsaws. It’s hot. He sneaks into Merlotte’s and we see that the flunky hasn’t called Maryann yet about Sam. Jason notices the bar orgy and then shouts that the party is over. When he revs up his chainsaw everyone just starts laughing. He eventually holds a giant nail gun to Arlene’s head and that seems to get Terry’s attention. Terry orders everyone to leave Jason alone in the bar.
Bill’s puking out the window as Sookie drives through the town. Sookie wants to call Eric, but Bill won’t have none of that. Sookie tells Bill that Maryann was the one who attacked her in the woods and Bill suggests they see if Tara can help them.
Inside Merlotte’s Jason is trying to convince Sam and Andy to exit the freezer. He convinces them he’s not crazy. The mob soon crashes the party and re-enters the bar, this time carrying guns. Terry tells Sam there’s no escape. Sam tells the others to save themselves and then offers himself to the crowd.
Tara’s chanting some foreign language at Lafayette’s house. Lafayette admits that he and Lettie Mae suck at interventions as a client knocks on the door, looking for some V. Bill arrives and scares the lady off (but not before Lafayette tells him that Eric has him dealing V). Sookie goes inside the house and sees Tara and her crazy eyes. She tries to read Tara’s mind, only to find out that it’s completely black. Bill tells her to go deeper. Bill offers to glamour Tara in order to allow Sookie deeper access to her mind.
The crowd is outside the bar, tying Sam to the hood of a car. Some fireworks go off and distracting the crowd. Jason appears, pretending to be a god. It’s hilarious and really only works since the crazy people seem to have some weird, blurry tunnel vision. Sam joins in the charade, asking Jason to ‘smite him’. Jason shouts and then Sam disappears (changes into an animal). Terry tells the crazies to head back to Maryann’s. The group leaves and Sam reappears, buck naked except for a apron.
Back at Lafayette’s house, Bill’s glamour isn’t really working. Sookie manages to gain access to Tara’s mind for a few seconds and it seems to be enough to snap Tara out of it. The black eyes disappear and Sookie comforts her crying friend. After a minute, Tara wants to save Eggs, but Lafayette stops her.
Outside, Sookie wonders what Maryann is and why she’s doing all these horrible things. She repeats the chant and Bill recognizes that it’s a Bacchus chant. Bill admits that he doesn’t know how to kill Maryann, but says there’s one vampire who might now. He wants to go alone and leaves.
Inside Bill’s house, Hoyt refuses to let his mother leave the house and go to Merlotte’s. Mama Hoyt keeps bad mouthing her son, which causes Jess to get pissed and bite into her neck.
Bill arrives at a house with a nice zen garden, where the Queen is apparently waiting for him. He says ‘your majesty’and all we see is a woman’s leg and foot, with blood dripping down it.
Wow, short episode. Guess we’ll be waiting until next week to see Evan Rachel Wood (the Queen) join the cast.

Thanks Clarissa, great recap!
I didn't know Evan Rachel Wood was going to play the Queen. She is the star of one of my fave movies ever- Thirteen.
Dayum, Jason looks better and better each episode, doesn't he? When he got up on that truck, shirtless and with pants showing what a friend calls "his f**k muscles" I thought I would swoon;)
(Off topic but, I saw an episode of Summerland on the weekend- I had no idea that Jason was really Australian- I have never heard him lose his bayou accent…)
So, any ideas as to what Sookie is?
I love that you read and comment on my recap every week! Yes, Jason is HOT. It's nearly impossible to describe how hot he was in this episode. The whole episode felt kind of filler, but I loved his scenes. He can nail gun me anytime!
No ideas about Sookie. Despite the fact that I constantly read spoilers, I haven't read any for True Blood this year. I'm as in the dark as you!
