Nashville Midseason Premiere Review: Rayna and Deacon Finally Say “I Do”

Nashville

Nashville fans, it has been a long road to get to this wedding. Despite the main event taking center stage, it is also a very long 24 hours to even make it to the James-Claybourne nuptials. The bride and groom make it to the end of the aisle, but like the journey to get there, the hours leading up were not without some hiccups.

Rayna and Deacon are supposed to have the wedding of their dreams, but this wedding is definitely not going off without a hitch. The ceremony is supposed to take place near a lake Rayna used to go with her mother, but the location must be moved when the paparazzi get wind of it. Overnight the location must be changed and guests must be quickly notified. At the rehearsal dinner Deacon shoves a paparazzo who tries to get in Maddie’s face, creating some rough wedding day tabloid headlines. This causes Maddie to reflect on whether or not she actually trusts her father. Then there’s Daphne, who has felt alone ever since her father went to prison. Deacon isn’t trying to replace Teddy, but to a little girl who misses her dad, that’s what it feels like. Tandy has also made no secret how apprehensive she is about Rayna marrying Deacon.

By this point Rayna has had enough. As much as she wants to ease everyone’s anxiety, she just doesn’t have the patience for it. She’s waited half her life to marry the man she loves, and she’s not giving that up for anything; because it’s right, even if it isn’t perfect. She has a talk with Tandy to that effect, and then with Daphne and Maddie about their family of 3 is only going to be adding more love. Deacon starts to buy into all of the pressure and family angst, but he gets a pep talk from Frankie about living his life after getting a second chance.

Will is forced to bail on the wedding after Wade puts the word out that he is a difficult artist. Never mind that Will just refused to engage in a clandestine affair with a man who is openly homophobic.

Avery would have done better not to attend the wedding given his current attitude towards marriage. He’s barely keeping it together as he struggles lying for Juliette’s absence and allowing her to spend time with their daughter. He chooses to look at Rayna’s wedding as an opportunity to get wasted. Therefore Gunnar is on babysitting duty for Avery, and for Scarlett as well since he is trying to get her to have some fun at this shindig. Gunnar fails miserably in his wingman duties. Trying to set Scarlett up with a fun date doesn’t work out, and he loses track of Avery which results in Avery having a panic attack.

Layla returns for the wedding to support her mentor. She expects a public appearance for the first time in months to be difficult, but she is nowhere near prepared when Colt tells her the truth about how Jeff really died. Layla goes from grief-stricken widow mode to full-on revenge mode. Armed with the knowledge that Jeff died as a result of Juliette’s troubles, she sets her sights on Avery.

It was a long road to get here, and an extremely long day. When all is said and done, Rayna and Deacon become husband and wife. To the tune of Scarlett and Gunnar’s “When the Right One Comes Along”, Rayna and Deacon exchange vows, and there’s not a dry eye in the house. Finally, the couple country love songs are written about finally get their happy ending. Then again, this is Nashville, not the end of Cinderella. Who knows what’s about the corner.

Was the Nashville wedding everything you hoped it would be?
