Professor Says His Formatting Rules Must Be Followed Exactly, Student Decides To Take Him Literally

College assignments are already stressful, and worrying about every little formatting rule doesn’t help. Most students just want to share their ideas and do well, but some professors care as much about how a paper looks as what it says. When instructions aren’t clear, just following them can turn into its own challenge.

A college student ran into this problem in an English class with a professor who was very strict about essay formatting. The professor said that following the guidelines exactly would guarantee full formatting credit, so the student took the instructions literally.

Later, he shared his story on Reddit, and his unusual approach started a conversation about rules, loopholes, and how far students should go to meet their professors’ expectations.

Not everyone sees rules, responsibilities, and common sense in quite the same way

One college professor was notoriously strict about formatting and promised full credit to students who followed every instruction exactly

The student spotted loopholes in the syllabus and used them to create an unusually formatted essay

Neither side learned much as the student stood by his actions and the professor tightened his rules even further

It goes without saying, a professor needs clear rules to keep a classroom organized, but there is a difference between setting expectations and trying to control everything. If teachers pay too much attention to how students do an assignment, following the rules can become more important than learning. Students need guidance, but they also need space to think for themselves.

Teachers don’t need to control every detail to help students stay on track. In fact, giving students some freedom while being clear about expectations often works better. Students seem to be more motivated and engaged when teachers give guidance and let them make their own choices. Setting rules doesn’t have to take away students’ independence.

Put simply, a professor can expect quality work without making every formatting rule feel like a test of obedience. When professors explain why rules matter, allow some flexibility, and listen to students’ concerns, assignments become easier to manage. While strict standards help keep things organized, students also benefit from knowing the reasons behind them.

But teachers aren’t the only ones who can make classroom rules a source of tension. Sometimes, students push back against restrictions, especially if they feel their freedom to choose is being taken away. Rather than talk about their concerns, they might challenge the rules on purpose.

Some students don’t talk about what bothers them and instead push back against the rules. This often happens when they feel teachers are taking away too much of their freedom. In a study of 750 students, strict phone rules in class made students feel frustrated and angry, which led them to ignore or challenge the rules.

Of course, not every student who dislikes a rule has a good reason to ignore it. There’s a difference between asking questions about a rule and trying to get around it on purpose. Even if a student has a real complaint, looking for every loophole can turn a simple disagreement into a bigger conflict.

Then, when someone questions a rule, things can get personal fast. Instead of talking about what actually happened, both sides might start doubting each other’s motives. For example, a professor could see a student’s actions as disrespectful on purpose, while the student might think the professor is just trying to show who’s in charge instead of fixing the issue.

When both sides start doubting each other’s intentions, the conflict can get worse quickly. People often think that anyone who disagrees with them is biased or just not listening. This belief can make them respond more harshly, which gives the other person more reasons to get defensive. Soon, neither side really wants to work things out.

The longer this goes on, the harder it is to find any agreement. Neither person wants to let the other win easily, so even a simple talk about an assignment can turn into an argument about who gets the last word. By then, fixing the original problem usually isn’t the main focus anymore.

To break that cycle, it takes more than just telling someone to calm down. Both people should talk about what bothers them without blaming each other right away. For example, a professor can explain why certain requirements are important, and a student can share why an instruction feels unreasonable instead of just pushing boundaries.

The way people share their frustrations can also affect how an argument goes. If someone takes a moment to explain how they feel and shows they understand the other person’s side, the conversation can feel less tense. People usually listen better when they don’t feel blamed right away.

This approach doesn’t mean everyone has to agree or give up what they want. It just lets both sides explain themselves without making the conversation a contest. Often, finding a fair solution is more important than proving who’s right, especially when both people need to keep working together.

In the end, neither the student nor the professor seemed willing to reconsider their approach, leaving the same conflict waiting to happen again. Sometimes, proving a point matters less than knowing when to step back.

What do you think? Did either of them have a fair point, or did both take things too far? Share your thoughts in the comments!
