Last night’s Pretty Little Liars introduced a new element of a threat to the show who didn’t get the memo that blatantly threatening a Little Liar is not the name of the game.
Emily decided to rejoin the swim team and was met up with a girl named Paige, who takes her love of the game one step too damn far. Seeing Emily as competition and a threat to the title of Swim Team Captain, Paige goes out of her way to let Emily know that she’s not having it, despite Emily not caring two nuts about the swim team that much. Not only does Paige makes a homophobic remarks to Emily while trying to get her point across, but she also tries to drown Emily when their coach finds out! While we’re itching to add Paige to the PLL Suspect List just because she’s bat crap crazy, the girl doesn’t seem to have anything Allison De Laurentis-related on her brain. Lord, help us if she did, because Paige doesn’t do secret texts or messages, she goes for the throat. Literally.
While Paige’s eyes were mostly on the prize of the captaincy of the swim team, she still gave the Liars a new frightening clue in the form of bracelets she bought for the team, which were made just like the bracelets Allison had made for the Liars. Spencer makes it her task to go see the lady responsible for making the jewelry and that lady is none other than “Mrs. Garrett” herself, Charlotte Rae of Facts of Life! “Mrs. Garrett” informed Spencer that the person who purchased the bracelets Allison was actually… Spencer Hastings?!?! We all know this is a lie and we have our concerns solidified when a gloved figure (A?) returns to the shop later, where “Mrs. Garrett” eerily claims that she threw Spencer off the scent. You would think “Mrs. Garrett” was in cahoots with “A” or something by the way she greeted her guest . Creepy…
The other mystery of the week revolved around Allison’s older brother Jason and the photo, which was sent to the Liars at the end of last week’s episode. The girls were trying to figure out who the shadow behind Allison belonged to and where the photo was taken. They got both of their answers, but while one answer led the Liars to another leg of the mystery, the other revelation was a straight up shocker. Turns out the shadow in the photo belonged to Spencer, who was trailing Allison after an argument the two had over Ian. Spencer claims she kept mum about it, because she felt she was responsible for Allison’s disappearance. We always knew Spencer looked guilty since the pilot, but it’s clear now she’s only guilty of just flat out lying, but not Allison’s disappearance.
The other mystery involved Suspect Number One aka Ian, who Jason spilled was in the de Laurentis house all summer smoking pot with Jason and friends. This information places Ian in the proper location to ignite a relationship with Allison and shattered his prep boy exterior he passes off to everyone in town. While this makes Ian even more suspicious than before, Jason looked super shady as well; especially after he was creepily staring at the girls through Allison’s window where the picture was taken at the end of the episode. What is it with the teenage males in this town and creepiness? Is there something in the water?
The other big storyline involved “A” making Hanna work for hard for the money by humiliating herself again, but this time Hanna had to target a fellow Liar to make it to payday. The victim? Aria. The plan? Send Ella to the same event that Aria and Ezra would be attending as a couple. The prize? Money to help cover Ashley’s theft, which was about to blow wide open now that the old lady Ashley robbed wanted to meet earlier than expected. It’s here that Hanna chose family over friends, but luckily Hanna came to her senses (thanks to Spencer’s answer to a class discussion on bullying). With the help of Caleb, Hanna manages to postpone Ella from making it to the event on time (Caleb’s doing), sparing Aria from a heap of trouble. On the flip (yet slightly morbid side), the old lady passed away, sparring Ashley’s job and a hefty stint in prison. For now. Did “A” play a part in that ‘miracle’? We hope not, but “A” has been known to run people over. So…
Hanna doesn’t know how much her actions were integral in the Ella and Byron ‘reunion,’ which took place after Ella’s car was stuck, forcing her to call Byron. After some arguments, the two got hot and heavy in the car. Ella kept this from Aria the next day, but uses the event as a cover, which spooked Aria. Wonder if Aria was spooked at the close call or if she thought Hanna might have had something to do with Ella being at the event? The latter is unlikely, but then again, who knows?
So what did you guys think?
