Are We Ever Going to See a “Nicktoons Movie?”

Some folks are chomping at the bit to see a Nicktoons movie that would integrate the lot of them, and there’s not a lot of reasons why it couldn’t happen. There’s no real way to know whether or not Joe Murray’s words on Facebook are real or are being said to throw people off the scent, but the truth of the matter is that people are likely going to be divided on the matter until it finally gets decided. Some folks would be for it obviously as they want to see a bit of the past they remember growing up brought back to the present. Others however prefer to leave in the past where they can look at it from time to time and remember being a child cheering for the same cartoon characters day in and day out.

The deciding factor of course isn’t going to come down to a petition, as the creators and those in charge of Nicktoons could pretty easily shred a petition and ignore it, will be whether those same creators see it as a lucrative and worthwhile endeavor. It’s hard to break it to those that are so firmly for this to happen, but the creators of anything that we liked way back when aren’t under any obligation to continue anything that they’ve already put a lid on. If they want to do it then they will, and people will be happy. But if they don’t want to do it then some people will be unhappy and some will breathe a sigh of relief that their childhood is left intact. But there are a few reasons why this probably should and shouldn’t happen, if you’ll keep reading.

There’s no way to leave the cartoons as they were and attract a new group of children.

Without any disrespect intended towards Simeon Davenport, the author of the article that spurred this on, but 120 supporters is not enough to gain the attention of the studio, let alone convince them that it’s a good idea to bring this back. And asking that they bring the toons back as they were is not going to happen, as an update would mostly likely be deemed necessary in order to allow the children of this day and age to understand what it was we were viewing as kids. Things have changed quite a bit since the 90’s and while kids will watch just about anything, which has been proven in every era, it’s important that what they’re watching is geared towards their era so that they can gain full enjoyment from it. Some kids from today do manage to understand and enjoy cartoons from decades before, but many simply don’t understand why they were considered funny. The technological aspect alone would confuse a great many kids that have grown up in this era.

Studios look at the bottom line quite often and don’t always cater to fans largely because there isn’t always a lot of money in it.

This might make them sound like money-hungry ogres but in truth it’s good business sense. You don’t spend a load of capital on something that won’t at least allow you to break even. If there’s no projected chance of profit then many studios won’t even touch a project unless there’s a definitive reason for doing so. Nicktoons were popular back in the 90’s and were a huge hit, but times have moved on and so have the cartoons. These oldies, I can’t believe I just called them that, are those that we enjoyed as kids and found absolutely entertaining without question. But those of us that still want to see them aren’t the majority. The kind of numbers one would need for a petition the likes of which was created would need to be astronomical at least in order to get the kind of attention that the studios would need to justify making this movie. It’s a desired project no doubt, but it’s not one that would be given the green light unless the studio felt it was in their best interest.

It could spark some interest.

There is still that possibility that it could help create a bridge between the kids of today and the adults that grew up with these cartoons. Let’s put it nicely, there wasn’t a whole lot that could be learned from these toons as they were largely for entertainment’s sake. But they were a special kind of entertainment that was amusing to watch and managed to fill the hours at times. Nostalgia does count for something, so a movie that incorporated every last one of these characters would be something unique and quite special. However, the animation would have to be somehow unified in order to make it appear like the same movie, rather than two or three movies spliced together.

Don’t hold your breath, but it could be something interesting if it did happen.
