The New Mutants are coming to the big screen, and things are going to be a little different for all of us including the characters themselves. With the release of the theatrical trailer for the movie that’s coming out in April 2018, we immediately realize that this movie is not going to be much the usual “mutants save the world” type. It looks like these young mutants will have to learn how to save themselves first in this horror film before they can go on helping other people.
In the trailer, we see five mutants in a facility. How they ended up in this place is unclear at this point. The first mutant we see is the main character of the movie as in the comic book series. The Originals’ Blu Hunt plays Danielle Moonstar or Mirage, a mutant connected to an entity known as the Demon Bear. She is seen being questioned by Dr. Cecilia Reyes as portrayed by Alice Braga. The dialogue in the trailer gives us a clue that the team of mutants probably has yet to band at that point, and we have yet to see Mirage’s Demon Bear come out to play.
The young mutants are probably going to discover the extent of their abilities while in this facility. We then get a glimpse of all of them, starting with The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy as Rasputin or Mahik. Mahik’s ability is teleportation, but she’s also known as a demonic sorceress. Next we see Henry Zaga play Roberto da Costa, also known as Sunspot, who is basically a solar-powered mutant that can absorb and channel solar energy. Next up is Rahne Sinclair, more famously known as Wolfsbane, a young girl who’s also a werewolf at times. The movie draws star power from Wolfsbane actress, Maisie Williams, who is famous for her role as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. Lastly, we see a confused Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things, who is playing the role of Sam Guthrie a.k.a. Cannonball, a mutant who has the ability to surround his body in a force field and fly extremely fast.
This will be the first time Marvel will dive into the horror genre with a superhero movie. It’s an interesting take, but we’re not entirely sure how they’ll begin to tie in the lives of The New Mutants with the rest of the X-Men universe. At this point, the five young mutants are probably just beginning to learn about their powers, but they’ll have to figure out how to escape from this facility before we can even picture them as bona fide superheroes. We know that The New Mutants are planned as the first installment of a trilogy, so it seems that the new characters will have quite some ways to go before they become the team we know from the comic books. It’s also unclear at this point if Marvel will use horror as the medium for the rest of the films. It’ll be interesting to see how it all works out, but at this point, we can’t even picture this film to be a Marvel superhero movie at all, let alone an X-Men film. This may change once we’ve seen the film, but for now, it’s just another horror movie for us.
