On Wednesday, Netflix released some very interesting data about its subscribers’ binge-watching habits. Specifically, the streaming giant focused on which shows and which kind of shows are binge-watched the fastest.
With the data it collected, Netflix created its own binge scale, which it divided up into “devoured” and “savored.” If a show falls into the “devoured” category, subscribers spend more than two hours a day watching it, while shows that viewers watch less than two hours a day are a part of the “savored” category. According to Netflix’s data, the median days to complete the first season of a TV show was five days; additionally, the median hours per session of those that completed a show overall was 2 hours and 10 minutes.
The official Netflix binge scale below will give you a better idea of just how quickly subscribers burn through certain types of shows. Plus, the scale also offers up an example for each of the major categories listed (for example, BoJack Horseman is an irreverent comedy, while House of Cards is a political drama).
From that scale, one can see that viewers blow through thriller, horror, and sci-fi shows, while they typically take their time with comedies, political dramas, and historical dramas. But which shows exactly are people “savoring,” and which ones are they “devouring”? Netflix has provided more specific information for that as well.
