Nashville 1.20 “A Picture From Life’s Other Side” Recap

Nashville ep. 20

As Rayna and Deacon are taking steps forward (planning a dinner with her girls), Juliette is struggling to stay afloat and deal with scandal. Plus, Gunnar and Scarlett are battling their own issues. But hey, it wouldn’t be Nashville without scandal and some great music to go with!

This week’s episode picks up with Gunnar continuing his recording sessions while beginning a downward spiral. Since he already stole Jason’s song, he might as well become him too, right? Wrong! Scarlett doesn’t like the changes in him but she has more to worry about. She is preparing to perform for the first time at the Grand Ole Opry as Rayna’s first and only signed act on her new label!

Although Rayna is happy with Scarlett on the label, she needs another act. After hearing numerous guys she still hasn’t found someone she likes. At that moment Will bursts into the audition room and persuades her to hear him sing and she loves him. Very gutsy move on Will’s part but it works!

Meanwhile Juliette is trying to pay off Dante for the sex tape that he has of her but he keeps on demanding more money. In a tiny glimpse of happiness, Juliette and Avery begin to write a song together. Could this be a new love interest? Maybe!

Switching back to Rayna, Deacon comes over for dinner and plays music with the two girls just as Teddy walks in. Teddy freaks out and tells Rayna not to have him around the girls. When Rayna doesn’t listen he gets a retraining order against her that says she cannot be with the girls if she is with Deacon. Yikes!

As Scarlett’s gig is getting closer her relationship with Gunnar is getting worse. He has a radio appearance where he acts like a jerk and is clearly not the man she fell in love with. In hopes of fixing him, Scarlett asks Will to go and talk to him not knowing that they are currently not on speaking terms.

In a switch back to Juliette things are getting worse. As she finally decides not to give into Dante and just let him release the sex tape, her mother falls off the wagon and buys drugs. Juliette realizes that this way Dante wont get as much money but she will be seen as the train wreck that she really is–so sad.

On the political side of Nashville, Tandy is trying to overturn her father’s position as the head of their company and take over herself. As she is ruining her relationship with Lamar, Rayna is strengthening hers. Rayna turns to her father for help with the Teddy issue and he jumps at the thought of helping her–so sweet.

Rayna then tells Deacon about the restraining order and he is obviously in full support of her too. As she hangs up the phone Maddie walks in and Rayna tells her that she is dating Deacon. Maddie seems to take it pretty well…but she doesn’t know the whole story.

That evening Rayna heads to the Grand Ole Opry to announce her label as Scarlett prepares to go on stage. Lucky for Scarlett, uncle Deacon is on stage playing the guitar which helps calm her nerves. After the performance Scarlett goes to jail to bail out her boyfriend and neighbor. Will and Gunnar got in a fight earlier that night with random guys at a bar, right before they were supposed to go see Scarlett perform. When Scarlett bails them out she ends things with Gunnar. She says she fell in love with Gunnar… not his brother (who he is trying to become for his music)! So sad.

The next day Juliette is preparing to go on TV and tell her side of the sex scandal story before the CMA’s and before Dante actually releases the tape. Her mother however has another plan. Jolene takes the drugs she recently bought and then calls Dante and makes him a deal.

When he shows up to get the money, she pulls out a gun and kills him! She calls Juliette and stops her from going on the air but doesn’t tell her what she’s done. Juliette rushes to her mom’s apartment and finds Dante dead on the floor and then sees her mom dead on the couch from an overdose! Poor Juliette, just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for her, she loses the only family she has.

In other family drama, Teddy and Rayna go to a small court hearing about the restraining order. After the hearing (where they are told a real court hearing will happen in a couple of weeks), Rayna goes to Teddy and tells him to trust her. She would never do anything to risk his relationship with Maddie… too bad it is too late!

While they are at the hearing Maddie begins snooping in her mom’s room. She comes across a box and when she opens it up she finds old love letters and proof that Teddy isn’t her father! Looks like the cat is out of the bag.

Tune in next week for the season finale and to see what happens when Maddie tells Deacon what she found!
