Ever since he got into the Mission Impossible movies he’s been known as one of the greatest action actors in Hollywood. Well, to be honest he was already great, but now with that level of action to add to his resume he’s just that much greater. It’s been easy to give Tom Cruise a lot of grief for his beliefs and his odd behavior at times but one thing you definitely can’t get down on him for is that he knows how to navigate his way through a fight scene. He’s not super technical but he’s not just a bruiser either that will beat someone down with heavy-handed blows that could crack a concrete block. His fighting styles are usually those that are quick, efficient, and to the point, enough to get the job done and move on to the next issue.
It’s not always pretty, but it works.
5. Edge of Tomorrow
This is kind of a cheat since it’s easy to be a warrior with a mechanized suit and it’s even easier to be one when you know what’s coming. In this film Tom Cruise’s character accidentally gets doused, and killed, with the blood of an alien alpha after blowing the thing up. As a result he now lives the same day over, and over, and over, fighting a war that humanity can’t win on a continuous loop.
4. Collateral
Vincent is practicality mixed with brutality. He doesn’t care who he hurts since it’s all a matter of the job and a way to get paid. The hitman might have had a better night however had he moved on from Max’s cab and found someone with less scruples that would just take him where he wanted to go and not ask questions. If not for Max though Vincent might have finished his hit list and been gone that evening.
3. Mission Impossible 2
This looks like one of the more brutal fights in the MI series since it starts at high speed and then features a few hits and kicks that look hard enough to take down a man easily twice the size of the combatants. But of course both of them bounce back up after each hit, or roll back up, and keep going until finally Ethan Hunt delivers a vicious kick that sends his enemy falling hard to the ground.
2. Jack Reacher
If someone sees a group of guys hovering over him and doesn’t seem worried it might be time to concede the point and just walk away. There’s a chance his attitude might be a bluff but not a great one. Plus, once you get outside and get ready to fight, if he tells you that you asked for this, that’s a good sign that he’s not going to be an easy mark to take down.
1. The Last Samurai
The story might seem a little implausible but to be honest it’s a great movie, I thought, and the action scenes are intense. The samurai were in fact some of the greatest warriors in history, but like everything else in this world they had their time, and had to adapt.
Tom Cruise is a great actor, and an impressive action star.
