Just when you thought all the buzz over making fun of Pee Wee Herman was over. It was at one point, wasn’t it? The Jurassic Adventure with Pee Wee as the deadly, um, well…. It’s kind of hard to put Pee Wee and deadly in the same sentence without laughing. The idea is funny as heck but the mere fact that Pee Wee Herman was anything but a goofball is still something that’s hard to write. After all the guy played a fairly nutty individual that was more wrapped up in his bike than anything.
It’s been 32 years since Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was released and in all that time he’s been made to endure quite a bit of critical abuse for his character and for his huge mistake that kind of branded him for a while as an undesirable. Paul Reubens has done a lot since Pee Wee Herman and has only gotten attention for some of it since that infamous theater fiasco that pretty much ruined his career.
But if anyone thought that this act was over the top, and it was even if it was an adult film theater, try watching Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. There are moments in the movie when he gets a bit lewd, though not as bad as he did in the theater incident. The Jurassic Adventure depicted below is a humorous glance back and Pee Wee in an attempt to spoof the character at least and not vilify him as the media did over two decades ago. Back then he was all but labeled a sexual deviant for exposing himself and his show was dropped from CBS.
It was just about the end of his career to be honest, but somehow Reubens came back eventually. He went on to star as the number one henchman in Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Rutger Hauer, and then from that point on would star in several other films as a supporting character. His career never fully recovered after that huge hit in 1991, but at the very least he’s still in show business and does pop up from time to time. He had an appearance in the WWE as Pee Wee Herman a few years ago, and he even played the father of the Penguin on the hit series Gotham. So he’s been around, but his fame as Pee Wee has never been the same.
The classic film that really got him started is still something fun to watch since it’s the first time that people really saw him as a serious actor. The show featuring Pee Wee Herman was started in the early 80’s, but it was the film that really got him noticed, as it kind of re-invented the character and made him a little more wacky and a lot more family friendly, in some ways. Pee Wee Herman was one more iconic character that people actually remember fondly from their youth in many ways.
But the idea of him running down a Jurassic Park jeep on his bike is just hilarious.
