Of all of Mel Brooks’s hilarious spoof comedy movies many bring up Spaceballs as being one of his best. I happen to think that Blazing Saddles is his best work and it’s not even close. However, Spaceballs is certainly a fun movie that does a very solid job of poking fun at the Star Wars franchise. My only issue with Spaceballs is that I don’t feel it holds up quite as well as I’ve gotten older. I feel like the movie is better suited for kids than it is adults. Don’t get me wrong there’s plenty of adult humor in there but when you compare it to some of Mel’s other movies, it’s just not as up to snuff. Plus there’s Young Frankenstein and no one can compete with Gene Wilder.
But alas there’s a recent rumor that we may see another Spaceballs movie. It’s not confirmed in any Hollywood rags but Brooks was recently at a Q&A where the subject came up. Here’s the recent Reddit post
I was at a showing of “Young Frankenstein” that had a live Q&A with Mel Brooks today, and a question from the audience was “Is Spaceballs 2 coming?” to which he answered that he’s currently “talking” with MGM. So perhaps there’s hope that “The Search for More Money” will be coming! Hopefully they can get Rick Moranis out of retirement to reprise Dark Helmet again as well.
I’m in full agreement with this. The idea of a Spaceballs 2 doesn’t intrigue me but seeing Rick Moranis onscreen again does. Plus if they can get Michael Winslow and the dude that says “We ain’t found sh*t!” back, I’m all for it.
