There have been a lot of buddy films in the past and some of them have done fairly well, but then some of them seemed like they were doomed from the start. Maybe that’s why the idea of Tom Cruise and Will Smith teaming up seems like a hopeful but somehow risky proposition. It couldn’t do anything to hurt their reputations at this point however, as both men have been kind of allowing their careers to spiral downward for the last few years if not longer. It’s true they’ve been active, but at the same time there haven’t been any big, epic movies for either of them that have done anything to revive a career that seems to be headed for a very strange and hard to understand shift into obscurity. Perhaps teaming them up for a movie to see if they’d get the desired attention might be a good idea.
Concussion was really the last movie with Will Smith to get any kind of attention, while the upcoming Mission Impossible movie should at least give Cruise a shot at redemption. Bad Boys 3 is still rumored to be happening, and the long-awaited Top Gun sequel should at least pull in a few people if not more due to nostalgia and a chance to see just what Cruise has been up to. Right now though it really seems like the luster has worn off their careers and they’re simply waiting around for retirement or that one last, big sendoff that some actors get before they fade quietly into the night. For these two however that seems like it would be a shame, a fate that’s not just wrong, but a travesty of the sort that shouldn’t be allowed. Of course given that Will Smith is an active vlogger right now and Cruise is, well, busy, kind of.
A buddy film between these two seems unlikely however. Their sense of style is very different and their action movies are also very different when it comes to effects and how realistic each looks. Smith has almost always played the wise-cracking tough guy that is highly impulsive and does what he feels is needed in the moment, which is why After Earth was such a startling film since it went against his other characters. Cruise is usually the serious but sarcastic stuntman that can do just about anything and performs feats that are deemed impossible by anyone else on a regular basis. Those two styles would clash no doubt, but they could also be used together since Cruise would be the thinker and Smith would be the doer. It feels thin at the least, but there’s at least something there that could be used.
It seems an unlikely pairing at best, and a big mistake at worst. But something needs to be done to revive these guys’ careers and something along the lines of a movie that could very well shock viewers might be the thing to do. It’d have be done just right in order to work, but even if it didn’t it would give people something to talk about.
