After close to a decade’s time, James Cameron has started filming the follow-ups to Avatar, which remains one of the most successful movies of all time. As a result, there is now more and more information available about those upcoming movies, which should come as welcome news to those who have been waiting for a long, long time. One example is how Kate Winslet will be playing a new character in the Avatar sequels, who will be called Ronal.
What Do We Know about Kate Winslet’s Character in the Avatar Sequels?
There is a fair amount of information that has been released about Ronal. First and foremost, the character is supposed to be a member of the sea people who will be showing up in the Avatar sequels, who are a separate clan of the Na’vi living much closer to the water than those who we have seen before. As a result, interested individuals can expect Ronal to feature a great deal in the underwater scenes that have been promised for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.
In particular, it is interesting to note that Winslet has insisted on doing her own work in the water, which suggests that she has undergone the same training that the other cast members for the Avatar sequels are doing to make those scenes possible. For example, the cast members have been trained to hold their breath underwater for longer periods of time, which was rather important because they are supposed to film the underwater scenes without using scuba gear.
Furthermore, since the cast members are expected to convey a similar range of emotions beneath the waves as they would be expected upon the land, one cannot help but suspect that they got in a great deal of practice for underwater acting in preparation for the real thing. Considering what Cameron has said about doing entire dialogue scenes beneath the surface via the use of sign language, it seems probable that the training has been rather strenuous, which in turn, makes the efforts of the cast members including Winslet that much more impressive.
What Else Do We Know about the Avatar Sequels?
With that said, some people might be more interested in the other information that has been revealed about the Avatar sequels so far. For example, Cameron has stated that he has planned out an ambitious filming schedule for the upcoming movies, which is perhaps unsurprising considering that they are supposed to come out in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025. Given the interval between the first two sequels and the last two sequels, it should come as no surprise to learn that there will be a major break between those movies. However, what is interesting is that Cameron is planning to shoot the second and third movies at the same time, much as how he is planning to shoot the fourth and the fifth movies at the same time as well.
On another interesting note, it should be mentioned that we know a fair amount about the opposition that the Na’vi can expect to face in the Avatar sequels. This is because it has been announced that Stephen Lang will be reprising his role as Colonel Quaritch in not one, not two, not three, but rather all four of the upcoming movies, which one can’t help but wonder was based on his popularity with certain segments of those who watched the first Avatar. Regardless, more information is bound to come out as filming progresses, meaning that interested individuals should stay tuned.
