Who knew that Bruce Willis could predict the future? When you look at it he was definitely shooting in the dark when it came to really predicting the Blair Witch Project on its own, but the mere mention that such an idea would be followed through on is something that seems almost eerie really. Of course now I have to wonder how many other people seemed to ‘see’ this coming as well. Throughout history there have always been those who say things like ‘mark my words’ or ‘one of these days’ and so on and so forth. It’s a very vague way of telling the future by looking at the trends and what people find amusing on any given day or throughout a single year. But give Bruce Willis credit on this one, he seemed to have nearest lane to the inside track on this matter nearly five years before the Blair Witch Project somehow became a hit.
What’s even more confusing is how the Blair Witch Project was allowed to become so popular. I guess I shouldn’t say ‘allowed’ since it’s all a matter of choice, but the unexpected buzz about the film was kind of hard to imagine. After watching it the first time I think I actually got motion sickness from the constant movement of the camera. It’s the only time that theaters should have stocked up on Dramamine in order to keep people from vomiting all over the floors after trying to follow the erratic camera movements. And yet for all that it still managed to gain some popularity since people thought it was a great showing of a horror movie that was extremely low budget and didn’t waste time on a bunch of gory effects.
The terror of the movie seemed to always be on the edge of the frame and ready to strike but it never fully materialized, not even near the end when things were finally starting to really spiral into a coherent thought. Throughout the whole movie it was simply three friends trekking into the woods to find something that had been spoken of in legend but never seen in real life save for in rumors and gossip. It was a very poor attempt really at making a ‘documentary’-styled movie. The worst part is that so many people were actually fooled into believing that it was real that they actually checked the news and openly wondered what had become of the three friends.
There were a lot more people that weren’t fooled thankfully but the mythos of The Blair Witch Project went on to spawn a sequel that was, thankfully, not a documentary and became an actual film. There was also just recently another attempt at The Blair Witch Project in 2016, but interest in the film had waned so badly that its reviews weren’t anything to really write home about. So Bruce Willis might have done a good job at predicting the arrival of a movie like The Blair Witch Project, but the popularity of it was a thing that didn’t come close to rivaling the hype about it.
