The Mindy Project 2.15/2.16 Review: “French Me, You Idiot”/”Indian BBW”

The wait is finally over.  After taking a 2-month hiatus, The Mindy Project is back with two new episodes. It could not have come at a better time.  With How I Met Your Mother ending its legendary nine year run earlier this week, I needed another show to satisfy my thirst for laughter.  Thankfully, Mindy Kaling is a comic genius and these two fresh episodes did not disappoint.

The first episode entitled, “French Me, You Idiot” took place right where the show left off in January.  Mindy (Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) have just shared a passionate kiss on their flight home to New York.  Danny apologizes for kissing her. He asks her to reciprocate if she feels the same way. After some slight hesitation, Mindy obliges and the two end up in the lavatory.

Most of you are probably familiar with airplane bathrooms.  You barely have room to wash your hands, let alone hookup with someone.  The bathroom on this plane was luxurious and comfortably fit two people trying to get it on.  However, the two do end up in an awkward situation when Danny’s hand is stuck in the sink and Mindy’s hair gets flushed down the toilet.  What a hilarious way to come back after a long break!

Once the two are back in New York City, they return to Mindy’s apartment to find Cliff (Glenn Howerton) waiting for Mindy with a mariachi band.  He had previously broken up with Mindy, but now wants her back. Since Mindy obviously wants to be with Danny, she needs to figure out a way to lose this lawyer for good.

Mindy figures out that the best way for this relationship to end is to have Cliff break up with her.  She tries all sorts of tactics like peeing with the door open and talking about her psychic, but nothing seems to work.  Then Cliff gets a startling call. His grandmother has passed away. There is no way Mindy can break up with him now, especially since he has asked her to write the eulogy for him to read at the funeral.

Mindy does love her pop culture references, so it is no surprise she mentions Anna Nicole Smith being taken from us too soon in a eulogy about someone she has never met.  She does not even know Cliff’s grandmother’s name, which comes to light as he is reading her words. Mindy and Danny can’t fight the urges they have been holding in any longer.  They sneak off in the church and start making out in front of a bunch of candles.  I am sure you can guess what happens next.  The church starts on fire!  Only on TV, right?!

Everyone is outside while the fire department takes care of the issue.  Mindy admits to Cliff what has happened.  This causes Cliff to sucker punch Danny and leave our lives forever… hopefully.  Back at home, Mindy and Danny share another kiss and appear to be living happily ever.  That is until the episode that airs right after.

The “B-Storyline” in this episode is hardly worth mentioning, but I will devote one paragraph to it.  Jeremy (Ed Weeks, who is still just a filler character) is trying to drum up more business for the office from the New York Metropolitan Ballet Company.  After doing some research, he has determined that he has bed a majority of the dancers.  He then asks Peter (Adam Pally) to go to the ballet company.  Peter brings one of the mid-wives from upstairs with him.  Not surprisingly, Peter hates ballet and ends up messing everything up.

Now on to the second episode of the night.  This one is entitled, “Indian BBW.”  The episode begins with Danny and Mindy in bed. She wants to take things slow and Danny begrudgingly obliges.  He does admit that he could get any girl he wants. Mindy allows him to call his exes. Not one of them was interested, except for one woman who appears to be a prostitute.

The next thing we know Danny has been taken to the hospital.  He has viral meningitis.  Mindy rushes to his aid and tells him he can’t die yet because they have not been able to discuss what he should get her for her birthday.  I love that she can be caring and self-absorbed at the same time.  I would detest most characters that were like that, but not Mindy.

Mindy receives an emergency text from Peter so she heads back to the office.  It turns out that Peter looks at pornography on his computer during lunch.  While perusing the site Sploders, he found an adult video of Mindy that she made with her ex Tom (Bill Hader, hilarious as always).  Mind is of course mortified, especially when she learns Peter pleasured himself while watching it.  Her and Peter then stop by Tom’s dentist office and order him to return the video that was leaked by his brother.  Mindy thinks the problems is resolved, but Peter reminds her that it is still all over the internet for anyone to see.

The two visit the website, which conveniently is located in New York.  They ask for the video to be taken down.  The sleazy guys refuse because there is a high interest for Indian BBWs.  Mindy is unfamiliar with the term and when she finds out it means Big Beautiful Women, she is appalled.  Before they leave, the men ask Mindy if she would like to make another film for $300k.  Before Mindy can finish taking her clothes off, Peter escorts her out of the room.

The comedic drama is still continuing to unfold.  Morgan (Ike Barinholz, who was underused in these episodes), drops off Mindy’s work at the hospital room Danny is staying.  One of the things mistakenly brought was the adult DVD Tom delivered earlier in the day.  Before Mindy can make it to the room, Danny has watched the movie that depicts Mindy as a naughty Girl Scout.  Danny is disgusted, Mindy is ashamed, and Peter realizes that something is going on between the two of them.

In the end, Mindy ends up getting viral meningitis, which is contagious through kissing.  Another reason Peter believes the two are secretly dating.  Danny wheels himself to his girlfriend’s room and begins to read her Bridget Jones’ Diary. He even uses funny voices while he reads.  I liked these two together and hope they don’t end up breaking things off like Nick and Jess on New Girl. If they keep this secret long enough, they could be the next Monica and Chandler.
