Matt Smith Says He Wants to Return to Doctor Who

It has been some time since Matt Smith stepped down as the Eleventh Doctor. For proof, look no further than the fact that the Doctor Who franchise will be seeing a transition from the Twelfth Doctor to the Thirteenth Doctor this Christmas, which promises to be a momentous occasion for more than one reason. Regardless, considering the sheer length of time that has passed, it is no wonder that some people are curious about whether Smith will be making a return to the franchise anytime soon.

As it turned out, Smith is interested in the idea of returning to Doctor Who as the Eleventh Doctor. However, he has stated that he would prefer to wait until Jodie Whitaker has had some time to get used to playing the Thirteenth Doctor, which would have one more benefit in that it would provide her character with the time needed to become established for the fans of the franchise. With that said, this is particularly interesting in that there have been rumors that Smith was going to make an appearance in the upcoming Christmas special for the transition from the Twelfth Doctor to the Thirteenth Doctor, which seems less probable now. Still, the fans of the franchise won’t know what will happen until the special comes out, which won’t be that much further into the future.

How Would This Happen?

One of the cool things about Doctor Who is that its core premise would make the return of Smith as the Eleventh Doctor as simple and straightforward a process as it can be. After all, the Doctor is capable of traveling through both time and space, meaning that it is far from being impossible for multiple instances of the character to meet up. In fact, there are multiple specials that have seen the meeting of multiple Doctors, with a memorable example being “The Day of the Doctor” that saw the War Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, and the Eleventh Doctor struggling with the choice to use the superweapon called the Moment.

As a result, a meet-up between the Eleventh Doctor and the Thirteenth Doctor seems more probable than not at some point in the future. When that happens, it will be interesting to see how the characters interact with one another, which is always one of the most interesting upsides to such specials. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how Smith and Whitaker interact with one another, which could prove fun for the fans of the franchise as well.

Speaking of which, it is interesting to note that Smith offered a short comment on what he would tell Whitaker about playing the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who based on his own experiences. He said that he would offer her the same advice that he had offered her predecessor and his successor, Peter Capaldi. Simply put, he said at the time that Capaldi should listen to no one, which seems like advice tailored to ensure that each Doctor is their own unique character rather than an imperfect imitation of one of their predecessors. Something that is simple but nonetheless very sensible.
