As the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is reaching its conclusion, everything is starting to come full circle and this week’s episode definitely continued that trend.
One of the elements that got introduced in Marvel’s The Avengers when it came to Agent Coulson was the mentioning of a certain cellist. Ever since then, people have wanted to see that, especially when Marvel announced that they were creating this show. This week they finally got to meet her, Audrey Nathan aka The Cellist, played by the outstanding and beautiful Amy Acker. For fans of the Whedon-verse, getting someone like Acker for this special character is one of the best casting jobs of the series.
She really made Audrey look and feel like the character that Coulson always referred to as someone special to him. The thing that was frustrating was that Coulson didn’t tell her, but that’s still good writing because it means that they can now build up to that moment when he does eventually tell her. Despite that Acker is busy with her own show; it wouldn’t be shocking if we actually saw her again in any of these last three episodes as well as beyond this season as a guest star again.
Out of all these episodes, this one had the most Easter Eggs from the Marvel Universe as well as other nerdy references. Being the geek that I’m, it was thrilling to get several exciting things. It’s a tie between Simmons mentioning the TARDIS and the revelation that Triplett is the grandson of Gabe Jones, a Howling Commando which is the team that we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger.
It was a pleasant surprise to see that Marvel would allow this original character to have that family connection to Jones who wasn’t really a big character in that movie. It would be very fun to see Marvel either do it through this TV show or even in one of their movies, form the next generation of the Howling Commandos and have Triplett be part of it. I know it would be great to see B.J. Britt pop up in one of the movies and being part of that team so fingers crossed.
I was never familiar with the Marvel villain Blackout (played by Patrick Brennan in this episode), but seeing his introduction on Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. was a great way to get to explore that character for the first time. We also get introduced to the concept of Darkforce from the comic books and it’s kind of cool that this hadn’t been mentioned previously in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until now. Since it seems that Darkforce is something that was known within S.H.I.E.L.D., it begs the question whether it will ever play a role in a Marvel movie.
While it’s completely understandable why Coulson kept behaving the way he did towards May, after he lost his whole world and found out what she and Fury had been up to this whole time, it feels like his harsh behavior towards her was a little bit too much. This later leads up to May eventually leaving and we get to meet May’s mother who seems to be just as strict as she is. They are now going to go and find Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) who will be in next week’s episode as previously announced, but what will it lead to for Coulson and the team? Better tune in next week to find out!
Overall, “The Only Light in the Darkness” was another solid episode and with only three episodes remaining as well as a season 2 renewal just around the corner, the next three Tuesdays are going to be very exciting to follow.
