There are times when it seems as though reboots are becoming more and more popular. For example, look at how CBS has order not one but two pilots based on reboots. One is a reboot of Magnum P.I. while the other is a reboot of Cagney and Lacey, meaning that people who remember those TV shows from the 1980s with fondness might want to check out their successors once they become available to interested individuals.
Magnum P.I. was about a veteran named Thomas Magnum making a living as a private investigator in Hawaii with some help from his friends. Said character was supposed to be a Vietnam War veteran, but in the reboot, said character will be an Afghanistan War veteran, which makes sense because it is supposed to appeal to a new generation that have lived through new events of note. For the most part, other details have remained much the same, meaning that the reboot of Magnum P.I. should provide interested individuals with a lot of the same charm as its predecessor. However, it is important to note that there has been a significant change in that Jonathan Higgins will now be Juliet Higgins. Consider the love-hate relationship between Magnum and Higgins in the original Magnum P.I., it seems probable that there will be a similar relationship between their successors, which in turn, makes it probable that people who are interested in the reboot have already started eyeing the two characters as a romantic pair.
Regardless, it has been known for some time that a Magnum P.I. reboot was being developed, whereas the Cagney and Lacey reboot has come as more of a surprise. For those who are unfamiliar with the premise, Cagney and Lacey is centered around Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey, who were a pair of female police officers with very different backgrounds and circumstances. The original TV show’s focus on social issues made it rather influential. As a result, it seems probable that the new TV show will have a fair amount of focus on social issues as well, particularly since there has been such a renewed interest in feminism in recent years.
It has been announced that Magnum P.I. will have the involvement of Peter Lenkov, who was involved with both Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver as a writer as well as a producer. As a result, it seems safe to say that it is in rather experienced hands considering how those two TV shows came to be. For comparison, Cagney and Lacey has the involvement of Bridget Carpenter, who made major contributions to HBO’s Westworld. Something that bodes well for the Cagney and Lacey reboot.
With that said, it is interesting to note that while CBS is putting a lot of trust in these reboots, it is far from being alone in this regard. After all, other TV channels have ordered other reboots, with examples ranging from The CW going ahead with a Charmed reboot to ABC going ahead with a The Greatest American Hero reboot.
