The Magicians gives us the first filler episode of the season. The writers surprise me with how early they chose to have a filler, and “Hotel Spa Potions” felt disjointed throughout.
The main crew set out to find battle magic at Brakebills with the help of some professors. At one point, the dead introduces Quentin and Alice to a very sexual Pixie, all to get a spell. Eventually, they get what they need, but it felt unfocused.
Quentin warns Julia that the spell they will use to kill the Beast could also kill her, and she does not take this well. Again, these short scenes could have gone in other episodes to build more tension, but it was really lost this week.
At the very least, the Beast was entertaining. He can sing! He attempts to use Marina as bait for the demon, but she doesn’t budge. There is a great moment where Marina is in way over her head and must ask for help from Brakebills. Denied! I am sure that someone at Brakebills will regret helping her.
Meanwhile, in Filory, Elliot teaches the kingdom how to farm without magic. It’s a very uneventful plotline, and the rest of the group shows up at the end of the episode to spare him more misery.
“Hotel Spa Potions” covered a few plot holes before the big fight with the Beast. However, I would be surprised if they actually fight him before the last ten minutes of the episode next week. Hopefully the next episode will have better flow to it.
