After reading Kara Hedash’s article in ScreenRant it’s kind of obvious that a lot of people are going to be chomping at the bit to learn just how a female Thor is going to work in the MCU and how Jane Foster became worthy of the sacred title in the first place. Well, that little tidbit might a part of the comics that might be omitted in the upcoming movie Thor: Love and Thunder since quite honestly Mjolnir seems to pick and choose who’s most worthy to lift it at times. There have been a few different people that have been able to wield Thor’s hammer, but while a couple of them have done so through trickery others have proven themselves quite worthy without having to resort to other methods. Jane Foster, as we know from the comics and the movies, isn’t exactly a bad person but thinking that she’s entirely worthy of the hammer might spark a debate that could easily divide people along the same lines of many MCU conflicts.
The reality of it though is that at one point Thor did lose the ability to wield his hammer as his convictions, his belief, or just SOMETHING, was challenged in such a way that neither he nor Odin could lift the hammer or even budge it. Left on the moon’s surface, Mjolnir would remain until an unknown woman was seen to retrieve it, thereby gaining the powers of Thor as the inscription on the hammer changed every so slightly “she” instead of “he”. Let it never be said that Mjolnir wasn’t an equal opportunity hammer since quite honestly this seems to indicate that it will allow anyone, no matter their gender, to wield it so long as it deems them worthy. With Thor unworthy to old it, he eventually did meet up with female Thor and admitted that she had earned the right to wield the weapon, changing his name to Odinson for the time being. The bad part is that while Jane Foster was able to do a lot of good as female Thor and was truly a force to be reckoned with since she possessed all of Thor’s powers and abilities, the downside was that her human condition, breast cancer, was slowly killing her. She’d neglected to try and magical effects that might keep the disease at bay and instead decided to undergo chemotherapy, which seemed to be working.
The unfortunate part however was that the hammer purged her body of the cancerous effects and the chemicals that were helping her to fight the disease. What this meant was that every time she changed back to her human form, the immunity that she’d gained as a god was replaced by her frail condition, and without the chemicals within her body to combat the disease, the cancer returned more aggressively each time, thereby worsening her health as she continued to fade just a bit more. At one point Doctor Strange, the only person that knew her secret identity, informed her that if she changed back again it would be the end of her. As she’d inherited his powers, she had also inherited Thor’s zeal for protecting others and could not resist the urge to transform one more time, sacrificing herself and Mjolnir for final mission as Odin and Odinson, finally realizing who she was, managed to revive her. From that point on Jane urged Thor to take the hammer back and went on to continue her chemotherapy.
So quite honestly it would seem the Mjolnir is kind of a fickle weapon when one really looks at it, but it definitely picks some of the most pure souls in the Marvel universe since not just anyone is allowed to wield it against those enemies that deserve its less than gentle touch. But to think that we’ll be seeing female Thor in the upcoming movie is nothing short of great since it’s already been stated that Natalie Portman will be returning for the movie. Seeing her as female Thor might be kind of interesting, but it’s also a wonder as to whether she’ll take on the mantle or if we’ll see her somehow transformed into another, more powerful-looking female since quite honestly Portman is a great actress and in great shape, but at the same time she’s a rather slight individual that might need to bulk up for such a role. Then again there is such a thing as CGI, which has been getting better and better with each movie. Until the moment happens it would be wise for a lot of people to brush up on their understanding of female Thor and who she is. After all the idea of Thor losing control of his hammer once again would be kind of hard to bear given that this time it would seem that he’d be losing control of Stormbreaker, which might follow different rules than Mjolnir. The original hammer was after required to be placed back in its original timeline, so Stormbreaker would be the hammer that Thor would have to lose control of.
