Amazon is really swinging for the fences when it comes to developing their own shows, and now they’re taking on the challenge of bringing A League of Their Own to their stable of shows that are coming up. If you’ve seen the movie you might wonder when Amazon is going to start doing anything truly original but the kicker here is that they won’t be remaking the movie, but they will be using it as a basis. The series will be more of the same, drama and comedy mixed into one fun series that follows the Rockford Peaches as they go from their inception to the more modern day game that’s played by the end of the film. But if you’re looking to see Dottie, Kit, or any of the others you’re going to be disappointed.
Still it is nice to see that in the spirit of continuing such an idea that Amazon would take it in a different direction in order to bring some new life back to it and create something that could be interesting to those that loved the movie. If you remember the whole idea of forming a women’s league was to give people something to watch while the men were away at war and the desire for baseball was still high enough warrant something new. Of course it was all about the dollars for some people but the feel of it and the essence of the game was what drew a lot of people and made them start to cheer for the ladies despite the few teams that were actually involved. Throughout the movie you didn’t really get the feel of what women were going through in a strong sense but you did manage to get it in small bits and pieces as the players described their husbands and just how life was at their home.
It was also a chance to see how women began to eventually develop into stronger, more independent people that didn’t need men in their lives to tell them what to do. Granted it was a movie and things didn’t always turn out this way, but it was a fun movie and managed to open people’s eyes and minds to a different time in history when women weren’t considered to be much more than stand-ins when it came to baseball. But their love of the game became so infectious that even one of their biggest critics, their own coach, stuck around at the end of the season and decided that it was worth his time. In other words the effort and the love the women showed for the game changed a lot of minds and warmed a lot of hearts over the course of the movie and it’s not too surprising that someone would decide that this is a worthy topic to make a series out of.
It’d be nice if they at least threw in a mention of the original peaches and how they progressed over the years at the very least.
