What we know about Peppermint, an action thriller starring Jennifer Garner, isn’t all that much so far. At this point what we do know is the fact that it will be a return to the action genre for Garner, who really hasn’t seen much of that since her role in the ill-fated Elektra movie and before that as the same character in Ben Affleck’s abysmal attempt as Daredevil. Garner is no stranger to action since she did star in Alias for a while before getting into the action movie scene, but it’s still been a while since we got to see her flex her muscles on the big screen. Peppermint is slated to come out in 2018.
What little else is known about the film is that it will focus on Garner’s character. Her family is gunned down in a drive-by shooting that leaves her in a coma. When she wakes up she finds that there is no justice being done and nothing that can be done to bring justice for her family. So instead of depending on the police she takes the only other route that is so readily available in movies and trains herself intensely for the next ten years, turning herself into a lethal killing machine with little if any remorse. In a sense the story sounds as though it might lead to the old cautionary tale that has to do with hunting monsters. It’s often wise to take care that one does not become the monster.
To be honest it’s not too far of a cry from her role as Elektra, though there are some notable differences. For one, Elektra was raised with a harsh, overbearing father that wanted her to be highly trained and inordinately tough, according to the movie adaptation anyway. Plus, Elektra was already an assassin before she died for the first time. Her role in this coming movie will place her as a mother and wife before she ever becomes the hardened killer that she is destined to be.
Revenge movies tend to be very popular with certain crowds as they give us an idea of what might happen to anyone that is pushed too far and is forced to lose those that they love. The reality however is that this happens far too often and those of us that think we would go renegade have neither the means nor the nerve to do such a thing. Most common, law-abiding citizens would only go rogue in the worst circumstances, and even then the reality of their situation would hit them like a ton of bricks, and their conscience would make it nearly impossible for them to continue with such a life.
You would think that losing a spouse and a child would leave you with a sour taste in your mouth if there was no justice done for them, and you might be right. But the fact is that a lot of people would wallow in despair long before they took the kind of measures you see in movies.
