By now you’ve either worked yourself into a tizzy about seeing the newest Planet of The Apes movie, but there are a few things you might want to know first before rushing to the movie theater. If you’ve already seen it then by all means don’t spoil it for others. The third installment in this new series is staying true to form at least and hasn’t yet deviated as some people might have expected. Instead of utter disappointment fans are excited to see that this version of the Planet of The Apes is staying true to its intended course. No offense to Mark Wahlberg, but thus far this franchise has found a much better direction.
Here are a few things you might want to know before sitting down to watch War for the Planet of Apes.
It is a sequel to the last movie.
Thankfully it’s staying on track and there are no huge jumps forward or flashbacks to indicate that this is anything but a sequel that is driving the story forward. Unlike the failed remake of the Planet of the Apes this is not set in some far flung dystopian future where the apes have already taken over and human beings are relegated to little more than tribal savages. The world as it stands is on the brink, but it’s not over yet, and humanity is set to make a last stand against their more brutish cousins.
Caesar is still very much in charge.
The lead ape that started this revolution is still at the head of the action. It’s important to keep in mind that despite his actions previously, Caesar did not want this type of escalation. He wanted his people to be free and to live in peace apart from the humans. Unfortunately the apes were seen as a threat and as a result the human race saw fit to go to war. The apes aren’t blameless, as there are those among their number that were all for conflict. Caesar however is the type of character that doesn’t want to fight, but will throw down in a hurry if his family and his people are being threatened.
Treachery is no longer limited to humanity.
You might have noticed in the trailer to War for the Planet of the Apes that it would appear that some of Caesar’s people are willingly helping the humans. There’s nothing new to the fact that there have always been defectors on both sides of a war. Idealism is the real dividing line between species in this film, and there will be no shortage of those that feel that one side or the other is wrong in their beliefs. Caesar and his people will have to deal with treachery just as their human counterparts do.
This isn’t the last film.
Before you go into the film thinking this is it, that this is the epic showdown between mankind and apes, you should know that there is at least one more film planned in this series. The war is going to come to a head at some point, but keep in mind that if it follows the source material it will eventually have to boil over on the side of the apes. The process of getting to that point is going to be very interesting indeed.
The War for the Planet of the Apes is going to be an epic that movie fans will remember for years to come. Just be ready and willing to accept the fact that this film is going to get dark, and the battle is going to be epic.
