What we Know About Disney’s “Artemis Fowl” So Far

It seems at times that developing a book into a movie can take an interminable amount of time as the type of transition that is needed requires a great deal of patience, resolve, and a level of compromise that is more taxing than most marriages. Pushing a book through to movie status is not easy at all, but for Artemis Fowl, which is finally going to see the big screen in 2019, the wait is almost over.

Here’s everything you need to know so far about the upcoming movie.

The author describes it as Die Hard with fairies.

To be honest Artemis is more of an anti-hero than the trusty heroic type and usually does what he needs to in order to survive and preserve his family name. Despite being compared to Harry Potter the author doesn’t really care to lump his creation in with such a familiar name since Artemis is more likely to do what is convenient and what he feels is beneficial instead of what seems right. There is a vast difference after all in being a hero and being someone that just wants to get ahead in life.

Kenneth Branagh is directing.

He’s made quite a name for himself as an actor and a director and will be taking on this project to add yet another interesting title to his resume. He’s already proven that he can make hits with such movies as Thor, Cinderella, and the soon to come Murder On The Orient Express. To date he’s done a number of projects as an actor and a director, but it’s been some time since we’ve seen a bit of flare as might show up in Artemis Fowl.

Judi Dench might be starring in it.

This would bring a definite sense of elegance and quiet dignity to the film if Dench is indeed involved. She’s been a well-respected actress for so long that her credentials more than speak for themselves. It will also be the second time that she’s worked with Branagh.

The transition was started back in 2001.

As it happens so often the direction that the initial director wanted to go in wasn’t deemed worth filming, neither was the direction that a second director wanted to go in. It took some time obviously but it would appear that Branagh and those in charge, and possibly the author, are now on the same wavelength and can finally bring their ideas to fruition. Nothing stalls out a book-based movie as much as miscommunication between those attempting to bring it to life.

The movie will be based on the first two books of the franchise.

How it’s handled in the future will depend heavily on the response of the audience. The first two books will make up the first movie and after that it will be determined if the project will move forward. There are six books in the Artemis Fowl series and if they do well it could be another beloved movie franchise. The book does have millions upon millions of readers after all.

If you or your children are patiently awaiting Artemis Fowl’s big screen debut you might want to mark the date on your calendar.
