Out of all the facts that have come off of any Alien movie I must admit that the creature in Alien 3 having Michelle Pfeiffer’s lips was not something I was aware of. It could have something to do with the fact that the creature is drooling so much and is so close to Ripley that you’re actually waiting for it to end her even though you didn’t want to see such a thing. The Aliens and Ripley would no doubt have as much of a vendetta against one another as anyone, if there were such thing as racial memories and the xenomorphs were a hive mind. There’s some proof of that but not enough that it would stick.
Plus, the shadows in this film are kind of hard to see past so really seeing the lips before they curl back is kind of tough. But as a design choice it still seems kind of odd even after reading the explanation of it. They wanted the creature to be more sensual for some reason, more personable, when really it’s more of a natural killer than anything. The romantic ideal of the xenomorph is something I’ve been trying to wrap my head around for a while now whenever it comes up, and for some reason some folks see a beauty within the controlled chaos of this thing that makes them bleary-eyed with some type of euphoria that doesn’t make a lot of sense but is still talked about as though it’s one of the greatest things to ever be realized about the franchise.
And here I sit scratching my head like a neanderthal wondering just what these folks are talking about. Seriously, the xenomorph is an engine of death, pure and simple. It was designed with a form that can blend into various landscapes, can disappear when it wants to, and can reappear with only seconds, if that, to spare before it takes your life. Throughout the movies the creatures have been seen to be death on claws and little else, but they’ve also been glamorized in a very disturbing way that makes me think that those who truly embrace chaos are seeing something that the rest of us don’t. There’s really nothing beautiful about having a spear-like tail shoved through your back or a set of inner jaws punched through your skull.
The overall form of the creature is something impressive to look at though. The body is lithe, agile, and very, very quick. It’s not too strong since the things can be blasted to pieces, but the mechanism behind having acid for blood is pretty cool since if you’re going to kill the thing it’s wise to not do so in an enclosed area or in a close proximity. These creatures have a very unique and overall masterful design, but to be quite honest the lips are about the last things that a lot of people look at, since the only person to try and show one of these things any attention was the android in Alien: Covenant.
Even he didn’t try to kiss the dang thing.
