Julian Fernando Casablancas is an American singer and songwriter known for his distinctive vocal style and influential indie rock sound. His artistic vision helped define a generation of garage rock revival.
He broke into the public eye as the frontman of The Strokes with their critically acclaimed 2001 debut album Is This It. The record’s raw energy and iconic tracks quickly established the band as global stars.
Early Life and Education
Born in New York City, Julian Casablancas grew up influenced by his mother, Jeanette Christiansen, a former Miss Denmark, and his stepfather, painter Sam Adoquei, who introduced him to diverse music like The Doors. His father, John Casablancas, founded Elite Model Management.
He attended Lycée Français de New York, then Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, and Dwight School, where he met future Strokes bandmates. Casablancas later studied music at Five Towns College and Adelphi University.
Notable Relationships
A string of high-profile romances has marked Julian Casablancas’s personal life, notably his marriage to Juliet Joslin, the former assistant manager of The Strokes. They married in 2005.
Casablancas and Joslin share two children, Cal and Zephyr, with whom he co-parents following their divorce in 2019.
