John Cena In Talks To Star In A Duke Nukem Movie

There are reports that John Cena is in negotiations to play the part of Duke Nukem in a Duke Nukem movie. Physically, Cena is an excellent choice, not least because he possesses a fair amount of resemblance to the character. However, it seems more than a little bit strange that Cena would ever consider the role, seeing as how he has put a fair amount of effort into being a role model for children, whereas Duke Nukem is best-known for being obnoxious, foul-mouthed, and in possession of a super-human ego. With that said, the choice to make a Duke Nukem movie is stranger still, though to be fair, this is the same film industry that produced The Emoji Movie.

What Else Do We Know About the Duke Nukem Movie?

First and foremost, it cannot be stressed enough that the choice to make a Duke Nukem movie now is really, really strange. After all, the Duke Nukem franchise had its heyday in the 1990s. For proof, look no further than the fact that three of its four main installments came out in 1991, 1993, and 1996, which were followed by spin-offs that were released in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002. There was one more main installment by the name of Duke Nukem Forever that was released in 2011, but the problem with Duke Nukem Forever is that it is best-known for being vaporware that needed a full 15 years of development. Even worse, once it came out, it was panned for its outdated design, its outdated graphics, its outdated humor, and perhaps most amusing, its lack of polish, which is why there hasn’t even been a Duke Nukem mobile game since 2011. Summed up, the Duke Nukem franchise has fallen flat on its face, which is why it is so strange that there is sufficient momentum to push forward now rather than in the past.

Regardless, the Duke Nukem movie is being produced by Platinum Dunes, which was co-created by Michael Bay. As a result, there is a non-zero chance that the movie will see extensive involvement from Bay, which suggests that someone somewhere in the production process has a refined sense of humor because this is an irritatingly appropriate choice. After all, the Duke Nukem franchise is centered around a man with muscles who blows things up with flashy weapons while uttering one-liners, all while being surrounded by young, gorgeous-looking women who are essentially props in the narrative. In other words, a Duke Nukem movie would be the distilled essence of Michael Bay movies, meaning that as horrific as it sounds, there is a non-zero chance that it could turn into a full-fledged film franchise because Bay is actually quite good at making blockbusters that sell well.

Further Considerations

It is still much too soon to speculate too much about what will happen. For example, while Cena is supposedly in discussions to play the titular role, it remains to be seen whether a deal will be reached. For that matter, it remains to be seen whether he is actually in discussions at all or not. Regardless, as time passes, more news is bound to come out, which is sure to satisfy those motivated by semi-unbelieving curiosity as much as those motivated by true interest.
