10 Things You Didn’t Know about Joely Richardson

It’s been said before that like breeds like but that saying kind of becomes meaningless after a while if it comes to mean that each and every person in a familial line absolutely HAS to follow the same goals in life. Joely Richardson never really wanted to go into show business despite the fact that much of her family went into the business in some manner and had been very successful up to a point. That life just never seemed to appeal to her all that much and yet it was what she was pressured to do when she was younger as the family had high expectations of her and her sister at one point. So she did manage to get into acting and she’s been quite good at it when she shows up on occasion, though listening to her speak off screen one can almost assume that she might have gone a different direction if she’d been allowed.

Here are a few things you might not have known.

10. She was born into a family that was firmly entrenched in show business.

As it was mentioned nearly everyone in her family had been in show business at one time or another and had found the kind of success that made it imperative for the line to keep going and for the next generation to surpass the one before it, if possible.

9. She was in Event Horizon.

There’s been a bit of debate in the past over how good this film really was since quite honestly the effects were pretty good and the story was great, it just needed a little more development and perhaps to be stretched out a bit longer or perhaps to condense other moments in the film to allow for the time. But it’s a decent horror flick to be honest.

8. She was considering a career in tennis at one point.

She was even two years into her tennis dreams when her father squashed the idea and told her that she was going to be an actor. Joely really had no intentions of taking up to the family tradition but seeing as it was kind of a do or don’t kind of option she went into acting and did as she was instructed.

7. She was in The Patriot.

As uplifting as this film was in some ways, and as brutal as it was in others, many people have pointed out the glaring inaccuracies that took place that seem to be glossed over and then kind of shoved to the back as the movie continues onward.

6. By the time the 80s came around acting was her life.

She took to acting well enough at least but she didn’t seem to have the same zeal with it as her family did during their time in the industry and it’s kind of apparent since she was just as happy doing small productions as big ones.

5. She was in the live action version of 101 Dalmatians.

This was actually a pretty cute film that didn’t seem to get enough credit for what it had to do work. There was plenty of comedy and drama in the film and it exemplified the animated version fairly well, save of course for the fact that the animals weren’t given voices of their own.

4. In terms of her career she’s not one to go for the gold all the time.

Joely likes to sit back and enjoy her career rather than push for every part that comes along. She knows very well how competitive the auditions for some roles can be and she knows her own limitations when it comes to getting certain roles as well. She’s not really into competing when she understands that other women might be better for the role.

3. Early in her career she had a lot of doubts about being in show business.

Living up to a family that has had such rousing success in show business is something that’s very hard to do and honestly it seems as though she was debating quitting altogether at some points and just doing what she wanted. After all at some point she became an adult and could have done anything else.

2. She’s not a big fan of walking the red carpet.

Just because a person smiles, waves, and looks as though they’re having a good time doesn’t mean that they want to be there. Joely is really uncomfortable when it comes to walking the red carpet as the number of people, the cameras, and all of it just kind of unnerve her to no end.

1. She was in King Ralph.

This was a genuinely funny movie that saw the unlikely end of the royal family and the line of succession drawn back to the only available heir that could be brought forward, and American named Ralph. You can just imagine how that would go over in England.

She’s talented, but Joely definitely had her doubts about becoming an actress.
