Jane the Virgin Review: Jane and Petra’s First Mother’s Day

Jane the Virgin

Happy Mother’s Day one and all! In preparation for this weekend’s holiday which honors the women who feed us, clothe us, champion for us, and blame us for their stretch marks (don’t worry, we get our chance to do the same, it’s a wonderful cycle), we are starting this celebration off with the only mother whose chastity is still intact since Mary herself. It’s Jane the Virgin‘s first Mother’s Day, so let’s recap the mayhem.

Jane plans on carrying the Villanueva Mother’s Day tradition of binge-watching in pajamas, but Petra has other plans in mind. Petra invites the Villanuevas over for a Mother’s Day Brunch, which turns into a Mother’s Day Lunch, which just doesn’t go well at all, but we’ll get to that.

Anyone else always know that Derek was a bad guy? Derek blackmails Rafael into giving him the Fairwick Hotel or else be turned in for insider trading. Rafael knows he is in a tough bind, so he confides in Jane, who confides in Michael. Petra overhears and rightfully tells Rafael he should have come to her immediately with issues of financial blackmail. She would be the one to know how to navigate a situation like this. And it looks like they’ll have their work cut out for them since Derek is indeed in cahoots with his evil Mama.

Rogelio is completely crushing on his fling Dina. He is hurt when he is not invited to Dina’s birthday party. Truth be told, Dina and Rogelio are such an odd match it is no wonder she thinks he won’t get along with her friends. So Rogelio asks Jane to give him a crash course in more culture-centric conversation as opposed to Kardashian-centric conversation. Rogelio panics and demands that Jane join him at the dinner to coach him through. They use stealth texting to get through the night, until a mishap busts them both. Dina forgives Rogelio because it was a sweet, if misguided gesture.

Xiomara is a little blue that Rogelio is moving on, so she tries to focus on work. She runs into Rogelio’s nemesis Esteban during a recording session, and he actually helps her get out of her head. Unfortunately, he later helps her out of a little more than that. Rogelio is definitely going to hit the roof on this one.

Michael begins work this week as a security consultant on Rogelio’s telenovela. At first Michael is bored out of his mind, until Rogelio promotes him to Technical Advisor for the show’s stunts. Michael takes his job very seriously, a little too seriously for the department’s liking. A telenovela doesn’t need to be as precise on the details as other shows. Michael understands he went a little overboard, but while watching a scene he gets an idea about Derek’s true affiliation with his mother’s crimes.

Remember when Anezka decided to be a little sneaky after hearing about how Jane entered Petra’s life? Yeah, that definitely rears it’s ugly head all over Jane. Jane panics when she realizes an ad has been run in the school newspaper offering her writing services for money. She assures her advisors that she had nothing to do with it. For once, the advisor who hates her actually has her back while her boss wants to pull her from the Teaching Assistant program since “drama seems to follow her around”.

Jane figures out that Anezka was the one who placed that ad, and Petra agrees to help set things right. That is, until Anezka tells Petra Jane was critiquing her mothering skills. It’s not that Jane said anything bad about Petra, but let’s remember that Petra is already on edge with her postpartum depression. Petra becomes defensive and ends up defending her guilty sister to Jane. At this point the party should be cancelled, but everybody wants to take the high road. It’s the most awkward lunch ever. Rogelio puts together a beautiful video for Jane where everyone in her family talks about why Jane is a wonderful mother. Anezka counters with a beautiful speech about how much she admires the life Petra has built for her daughters.

The fuzziness can’t last because Jane still wants Anezka to admit what she did. From there the tension becomes so bad that Anezka collapses into a seizure. Her epileptic attack gives Anezka the courage to tell Jane the truth, at the worst possible time since Petra just got done defending Anezka to Jane. It’s going to take alot to repair Jane and Petra’s…whatever it is.

How would you rate Jane and Petra’s first Mother’s Day? Could have been worse?
