Incredibles 2 Animation Comparison (2004 VS. 2018)

Looking at the difference between the Incredibles in 2014 vs the Incredibles in 2018 makes you realize that Jack-Jack should be in high school by now and Dash and Violet should be out on their own. After all it’s been 14 years since the first one was released. But apart from that there are other things to notice that make such comparisons a little more astounding. Let’s just start with the overall animation. In 2004 it was great, it flowed, it didn’t jerk or hitch every now and again like earlier attempts used to, and it was lifelike as it got for a cartoon back then. Now however you can see a big difference since everything looks so much more real.

When you compare the two side by side the almost plastic complexion of the characters in the 2004 movie seem far removed from the crisper and more realistic-looking faces and bodies of the current characters that are shown on the screen. The animation has reached the level to where each character is now showing signs of age and blemishes here and there that weren’t evident in the first movie. You might claim that blemishes were left out in order to make it seem more cartoonish and reflect that superheroes don’t often have blemishes, but quite honestly these days people do want to see a change in animation that makes it look just a little more life-like, enough so that it reflects the change in the individuals that are pictured. Plus, showing the physical development of a character can also make them more appealing to an audience as it shows that there is more depth to them than before and that they’ve progressed in a way that allows them to be seen as actual characters and not just caricatures.

The images in the 2018 version also seem crisper somehow, brighter even and more in focus. The almost soft lines of the 2004 version were fine for their time and conveyed a sense that it was in fact a cartoon and as such was beyond the normal boundaries of reality in several ways. By bringing the characters and settings into sharper focus it seems that the movie is stepping forward into modern times, much as it did in 2004 since the animation was quite well done. The change to the 2018 version shows the advances that have been made and the commitment to producing a film that people found enjoyable and a lot of fun when it first came out. Now that it’s been established that the entire family has powers it’s going to be interesting to see just what will happen since they have a baby that doesn’t know how to keep his abilities under control as of yet and seems to have a wide assortment of powers that the family will have to keep up with.

The Incredibles 2 will be hitting theaters this coming June and is already expected to be either just as good or even better than the original. That’s a bold claim of course but there’s always a chance that it will come true.
