If anyone remembers the moment in Game of Thrones where Daenerys Targaryen married Khal Drogo, you might also know that this scene took place in front of an extremely famous geological phenomenon. Known as the Azure Window, this piece of history is a limestone arch located in Malta. The Azure Window developed through sea and rain erosion of a cliff face over a period of about 500 years. Sadly on Wednesday a large storm hit the Mediterranean sea and the arch collapsed.
“Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion,” said Joseph Muscat, Malta’s prime minister, tweeted on Wednesday. “That sad day arrived.” “It is a very sad day for Malta. The iconic Azure Window collapsed this morning, succumbing to the forces of nature and the passage of time,” the country’s official tourism site added, via Twitter.
Back in 2013 a study concluded that an eventual collapse was inevitable. In order to slow down the erosion process Malta instituted a $1500 fine for anyone who walked across the arch. Sadly only four years later that arch is no more.
But at least we’ll always have this moment on GOT.
