How to Get Away with Murder Review: “What Happened to You, Annalise?”

How to Get Away with Murder

For the past few months, viewers have been waiting with anticipation for the return of How to Get Away with Murder. The mid-season finale in November closed some threads while absolutely blowing open plenty of new ones, and we’ve all been coming up with our own theories for the answers to some of the show’s biggest questions (just who is Christophe?????). The show has finally returned, though, so let’s take a look at what happened in this week’s new episode (Season 2, Episode 10), titled “What Happened to You, Annalise?”

The episode begins with Annalise repeating the name “Christophe” right after Wes shoots her. Two weeks later, Annalise finally returns home, with Bonnie helping her deal with her current situation. The hearing is set to take place the next morning, but it’s clear that Wes isn’t at all okay with the way that things have turned out. He finally manages to work up the courage and motivation to return to the study group (now meeting away from the office), while Annalise is shocked as a baby is left on her doorstep.

Interestingly, it turns out that Annalise is just suffering from the effects of Vicodin and PTSD, so Bonnie decides to drug her in an attempt to keep her from taking the stand at the hearing. The interns and Frank doctor a written statement that is supposed to be from Annalise, and Bonnie works her magic to convince everyone to accept it as admissible. Annalise is eventually able to sober up, but her worry for Wes and the lingering trauma make it hard for her to truly recover properly.

Because of the nature of How to Get Away with Murder, I don’t want to talk too specifically about what happens in the second half of the episode. “What Happened to You, Annalise?” does a good job, though, of catching us up with what happened in the two in-show weeks between the winter finale and spring premiere, and it does exactly what it should by answering just enough questions to satisfy while asking new ones that will take us through the remainder of the season. Viola Davis shines, of course, as the suffering Annalise, and the circumstances give her an opportunity to explore an aspect of Annalise that she hasn’t before. The rest of the cast, too, delivers wonderful performances, with Liza Weil’s Bonnie continuing to be one of the best things about the season. Additionally, the siblings are given their best material of the season in this episode, and I’m happier than ever that this storyline didn’t end early on.

“What Happened to You, Annalise?” proved to be a great return for one of the most emotionally draining shows on television, marked by solid performances all around. I can’t wait to see the remaining episodes of the season, and I have no doubt that this show won’t disappoint.
