My Hero Academia Season 3: Wild, Wild Pussycats Episode Review

After last week’s recap-heavy episode of My Hero Academia left us wanting more, this week’s episode, “Wild, Wild Pussycats” delivered a thrilling and action-packed start to the third season. With a perfect blend of action, story development, and laugh-out-loud moments, this episode was a significant improvement over its predecessor.

Class 1-A’s Unexpected Training Begins

En route to their summer training camp, Class 1-A’s training starts much earlier than anticipated as they are forced to fight their way through a perilous forest to reach their destination. After a grueling 3-hour journey, they finally arrive, only to discover that the training camp is designed to strengthen their quirks, not their technical skills or hero mentality. The focus is on increasing their stamina and power output. Along the way, the students meet two of their training camp instructors, Mandalay and Pixie-Bob of the Wild, Wild Pussycats, as well as Mandalay’s hero-hating nephew, which creates some tension with Deku.

The Forest Sequence: A Showcase of Teamwork and Skill

The forest sequence was a visual treat, highlighting the students’ incredible teamwork and their improved technical skills with their quirks since their first day at U.A. The beautifully choreographed fights showcased the students using their powers like true superheroes, complete with impressive combo attacks. The scene was not only visually stunning but also emotionally satisfying, making us cheer along with the students as they rallied together to reach the camp on time.

Masterful Pacing and Engaging Storytelling

The episode’s pacing was a standout feature. Unlike last week’s episode, which failed to utilize its time effectively, this episode managed to fit the story of two episodes into one without cutting corners or rushing through crucial moments. The pacing was a prime example of how this episode improved upon the shortcomings of the previous one.

A Perfect Blend of Character Moments and Humor

“Wild, Wild Pussycats” expertly balanced multiple plot points while delivering a great mix of character moments and strong humor. The adorable and hilarious conversation between Deku and Uraraka before the bus trip, the students banding together in the face of adversity, and Deku’s encounter with Kota, a kid who despises heroes, all contributed to an engaging and entertaining episode.

Deku is no stranger to questioning his ideals, but this time, he faces a significant challenge in the form of Kota, who holds the exact opposite beliefs as him. Kota’s hatred for superheroes stems from the death of his parents in the line of duty, leaving him alone while the world praised them as heroes. This challenges not only Deku but also the rest of the U.A. students’ philosophies. The episode foreshadows how this conflict might play out in the future.

A Minor Complaint: Unnecessary Sexual Humor

The only real complaint about this episode is the inclusion of sexual humor. While not uncommon in anime, the half-naked (and sometimes fully naked) high schoolers felt unnecessary and detracted from the overall experience. However, this is a larger conversation for another time. For now, let’s celebrate this episode for being action-packed, full of intriguing plot developments, and a significant improvement over the lackluster season premiere.
