It’s not known yet just what part Halle Berry will be playing in the remake of Jagged Edge but it seems likely that she’ll be playing the lawyer that keeps Forrester from being thrown into jail for the crime of supposedly killing his wife. As courtroom thrillers go this one seemed to fixate more on the proceedings and the ability of Barnes to discredit each and every one of the prosecutor’s witnesses in a manner that just flat out trumped them without mercy. Of course by the end she realized her mistake, which was kind of an obvious clue left behind by Forrester that led to Barnes’ eventual act of self-defense that revealed just who she’d been defending.
While remakes are usually pretty faithful to the original films there could be a few things changed around. Updating a film so that it can fit with the current era is pretty common in a movie like this, but there are times when the story is altered just a bit as well. It’s not entirely common but it does happen occasionally when a director wants to put their own spin or inject their own vision into a film. With Halle Berry things have already changed as far as the lineup goes since Glenn Close was the original actor that played Forrester’s lawyer. So far there isn’t a whole lot of information on the movie as to who else will be cast and when it will be coming out. That’s easy to figure though since it’s still in early development and this is more or less a way for people to know what’s coming out eventually and what to watch for. The film could be completely different than people remember with just the core story to hold it together, or it could remain faithful for those that might recall what it was about.
The whole story really revolves around the development between Barnes and Forrester, who’s being tried for murder. His innocence is constantly under attack but Barnes is so good that every time someone steps forward to offer another bit of testimony she can easily shoot it down and protect her client. It’s hinted at but never known until the end of the movie that Forrester is really the killer. The suspense of it is that he seems so innocent throughout the film even while he’s behind the killing the entire time. Back in the days when the movie was still fresh and new in the minds of the people it was probably one of the more cutting edge thrillers around. Nowadays it would still be that way but the thrill has got to be upped just a little bit. With the right director and the right cast this is entirely possible. Given that it’s been over three decades since its release there’s a lot that could possibly be altered and done just slightly different to make sure that the audience is adequately impressed.
Courtroom thrillers a lot of fun to watch if they’re done right.
