Bill Watters from ScreenRant helped to come up with this gem, that WarnerMedia’s streaming service will soon enough be coming out with an animated Gremlin’s prequel that will somehow tie into the first movie. Whether it pans out or not is going to be the question, but so far it sounds interesting enough to pursue since the idea of where Gizmo came from and what might have driven him from his own kind would be nice to learn. Plus, it will be introducing young Sam Wing, the individual that would become known as Grandfather and the owner of Gizmo in the original movie. Apparently in this prequel he’s going to be teaming up with a young girl to try and return Gizmo to his family, while dealing with various other monsters and an industrialist with his own army of gremlins along the way. With a season bound to last for at least ten episodes it would seem that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, is already gearing up to be something that could entice fans of the original movie to tune in and see if it’s to their liking.
The idea that there were more Mogwai back in the 1920s, which is when the prequel is being set, is kind of interesting since it would seem that this would be ideal considering that the magic in the world seems to have been still present back in this time without being so highly scrutinized by every last person that can pick up a smartphone or check online for the validity of the such a thing. Plus, even in the era of the first Gremlins movie the idea of anything supernatural was already starting to fade from public consciousness since technology and the ever-present need for humanity to drive forward and forget the superstitions of the past was already becoming a constant drive that was hard to avoid. In other words, seeing this set in the 20s is perfect since it would seem that the Mogwai would still be able to hide away in their own little part of the world, or within the crevices and crawlspaces of the human world that people rarely seem to check. But to think that someone had their own army of Gremlins in this particular universe is something kind of frightening since at one time it would mean that they either made use of a Mogwai or somehow subverted one in their care. In any case, it means that the gremlins were at one time an organized bunch that followed a leader and were able to be more than deadly pranksters that ran amok every time they had the chance.
If you remember correctly, not even Stripe managed to corral all of his people when it came to keeping them in line, as the bunch seemed inclined to do their own thing and make their own way, only coming together when it was a shared need or want. Snow White for instance seemed to be a moment that kept them kind of busy and entertained for a while, but that was quickly replaced by the idea of going after those that were trying to burn the theater down around them. But the implication that a single person in the 20s has an army of gremlins is something that might be uniquely terrifying since when gathered together these things are nothing but trouble.
The hope it would seem is that this prequel is going to interest people enough in the idea that Gremlins could once again be a viable movie franchise, as the sequel to Gremlins was, as most people know, a horrible flop that had a few funny moments and not much else. Where the first movie went over the top and came out with a healthy profit, the second movie ended up falling short of its budget when the numbers were finally tallied, which in turn tabled any idea of further expansion. Some folks think that Gremlins still has a lot of potential left to it, while others might be happy seeing it just fade off into the distance as it’s relegated once more to cinematic legend. Personally the idea of learning more about the Mogwai is intriguing since we didn’t get to learn a lot about them from either movie, and it’s fair to say that Gizmo is one of the most interesting characters in the entire movie and doesn’t get nearly enough attention. The gremlins took center stage quite a bit since they were flashier, more destructive, and caused a great deal of drama that people enjoyed watching as a town went nuts trying to understand or even survive the invasion of the little green buggers. But if there’s a chance to learn where the Mogwai came from, or even learn more about Gizmo, it would be worth taking the time to watch.
