We’re almost to the end of another season of television, but we’ve still got a few episodes of The Goldbergs left before we get there. Let’s take a look at this week’s new episode, “Magic Is Real.”
The main story in the episode deals with Adam finally deciding to move on after his breakup with his first girlfriend, Dana. He can’t quite figure out how to get a new girl, though (shoutout to Handsome Ben), so he seeks advice from his friends and family around him. Beverly, however, is ecstatic about getting her son back, and she invites him to join her and Pops in watching a David Copperfield special on TV. The special gives Adam an idea, and he attempts to use magic in order to get girls (because women love magic, obviously). Of course, Adam doesn’t have money of his own, so he tricks his mom into buying him supplies under the guise of having “mom time” with her. As you could expect, Beverly is the absolute worst assistant , and Adam ends up leaving her behind. He has no act at all without his assistant, though, and Beverly helps save the day while he impresses a new girl from school.
Elsewhere in “Magic Is Real,” Barry is supposed to be studying for the PSAT, but he just doesn’t think tests are for him. Unexpectedly, Murray jumps in and refuses to let his son blow off his future, and he signs him up for a PSAT prep course (that he immediately abandons). It turns out that his friends are dedicating all of their free time into studying, though, but Barry absolutely will not let go of his dreams. Erica and Lainey also try to convince Barry to study, but it seems like it’s going to be impossible to get him to think about his future. At least, the future that his family and friends want for him, that is. After attempting to convince everyone that he knows what he’s doing, though, it finally comes out that Barry is really just afraid that he would blow the test and doesn’t want to try and prove himself right. Murray is able to show Barry how much he believes in his son, though, and Barry is finally convinced to start studying for the test and putting an effort into the rest of his life.
“Magic Is Real” seemed like it would just be a funny episode at first (and it definitely was), but it ended up having some remarkably emotional moments in the end dealing with Barry and Adam. The Goldbergs always tends to handle these emotional stories in strong ways, and “Magic Is Real” is no exception at all.
