Glee 2.13 “Comeback” Review

Glee 2.13 “Comeback” ReviewWell, looks like I spoke way too soon.

Was it just me or did this episode feel like it would never end? I am not sure if it was the Bieber thing — which I’ll concede that it wasn’t as excruciatingly painful as I thought it would be, but it was still cringe-worthy — or if it was the whole package that made this episode really, really drag from me.

After the Superbowl and Valentine’s Day episodes, I thought Glee was finally back on track. And then they go and decide to do a Justin Bieber tribute.

I really wish I was kidding. Seriously.

A few weeks ago, when the rumors about this episode started to show up around the internet, Ryan Murphy stepped up and said that ‘Bieber [would] come up in episode 13 as a small plot point.’

It was not a small plot point. It dominated half of the episode. They even had poor Sam come up with a number called ‘The Bieber Experience’— in which he sang ‘Baby’— so he could impress Quinn and win her over. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the guys thought that that was a good idea and decided to put on another Bieber performance to impress their girlfriends.

Granted, the performances weren’t all bad. They were even better than the original, actually. That didn’t change the fact that I still wanted to run away screaming.

The other subplot was that Sue convinced Will that she was clinically depressed and suicidal, so he brought her over to Glee Club so she could feel better. In the end, she learned all she needed to know about show choir and backstabbed Will by becoming Oral Intensity (New Directions rival for Regionals) new coach. That particular plot should be interesting and during this episode, at least, it gave Mercedes something to do because she has been grossly underused this season. Sue tried to make her and Rachel fight, but then they sang and all was well again.

The only part that I liked — aside from Sue’s performance with the Glee Club — was when Will took her to the hospital to sing with the kids with cancer. That was actually really beautiful.

Other than that, it was not Glee’s finest hour.

Sorry, Gleeks, but ‘Comeback’gets a C- from me.
