Gaming For Primetime – Six Video Games That Would Conquer TV

Alan Wake

What it’s about: Alan Wake isn’t without its flaws, but the one thing it got right was atmosphere. The game is about a world-renowned horror writer Alan Wake as he vacations in the small town of Bright Falls with his wife in an attempt to overcome his writer’s block. Stop me if you’ve heard this one. During the twilight hours, shadows and darkness take over and control the residents of Bright Falls as well as inanimate objects and turn them against Wake and some other of the town’s inhabitants. As Wake tried to make sense of this and escape the darkness, he discovers pages from a manuscript that he doesn’t remember writing and all of these pages are coming true.

Who should play who: Finnish actor Ilkka Villi provided his likeness for Wake’s character model and played Wake in the absolutely terrifying ‘Bright Falls’live action promotional shorts Microsoft released to coincide with the game’s release. Villi would be a shoe-in, but whether or not he can replicate Wake’s raspy voice remains to be seen. If not Villi, then someone like Sam Rockwell would fill Wake’s shoes nicely. Dean Norris (Hank in ‘Breaking Bad’) would hopefully play Barry Wheeler, Wake’s loudmouth agent. The good news is, regardless of who would get cast, characters in the show would be much more expressive than their virtual counterparts.

Why it’s good TV: The game itself is broken up into ‘episodes,’with each with each level (or ‘episode’) beginning with a recap of important moments. Hey, they do that on television! Writers of the game created such a rich world filled with different characters. The ‘Bright Falls’prequel shorts worked well not only because of their use of the game’s back story and wonderful acting, but the fact that the protagonist is mentioned only once in the actual game. If ‘Bright Falls’was developed into a full-blown series, each season could focus on a different resident of the town as the story weaves in and out of the game’s events.
