Halloween haunted houses are designed to make you scream, jump out of your skin, and question every decision that led you through the front door. But I think the real entertainment comes from watching people’s reactions when a creepy creature suddenly lunges at them from a dark corner.
Some visitors cling to their friends for dear life, while others bolt for the nearest exit without looking back. Luckily, a hidden camera captures these moments, turning their most terrifying encounters into some seriously entertaining photos.
We’ve rounded up some of the funniest haunted house reactions, and Pandas, you might want to brace yourselves. From priceless facial expressions to full-blown panic, these photos prove that fear can bring out the most ridiculous side of anyone. Scroll on for a good laugh, and try to imagine how you’d look in their shoes!

Halloween has a much more interesting history than candy runs and elaborate costumes. The holiday traces its roots to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.
People believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred during this time, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits.
Centuries later, Christian traditions further shaped the holiday, with November 1 becoming All Saints’ Day and the evening before known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween.

Halloween isn’t the only tradition with a long history of frightening people for fun. In 1802, wax sculptor Marie Tussaud displayed eerie figures associated with the French Revolution in London, giving visitors an early taste of horror entertainment.
These macabre displays helped pave the way for the haunted attractions we know today, showing that people have been paying for a good fright for centuries.

While early horror attractions offered visitors a taste of the macabre, haunted houses eventually became a Halloween staple in their own right.
During the Great Depression, communities across America began organizing haunted houses and spooky trails to keep young people entertained after Halloween pranks became a growing problem.
Families transformed their basements into makeshift fright zones, setting the stage for the elaborate attractions we know today.

Today’s haunted attractions are carefully staged to keep visitors on edge. Dim lighting makes it difficult to see what’s waiting around the corner, eerie sounds create tension, and actors know exactly when to leap out of hiding.
The trick is to keep visitors guessing, because a scare is much more effective when you don’t know whether the shadow ahead is a harmless prop or someone about to shriek in your face.

People willingly pay to have the living daylights scared out of them. Haunted houses let visitors experience fear without real danger, turning the experience into a thrill rather than a genuine threat.
Research suggests that people enjoy these scares most when they find the sweet spot between feeling frightened and feeling in control. The adrenaline rush can be exciting, and once the threat passes, the relief makes the whole experience even more satisfying.

Going to a haunted house with friends makes the experience even more entertaining, especially when everyone reacts differently to the same scare. One person might confidently march ahead while another hangs back, insisting they’re only checking whether the path is safe.
Then an actor jumps out, and the self-appointed protector sprints toward the exit while their friends laugh behind them.

Hidden-camera photos at haunted attractions capture the kind of reactions people probably wouldn’t choose for their profile pictures. A camera can freeze the exact split second someone spots a monster, grabs their friend’s jacket, or makes a face they would never willingly show the world.
Someone who looked perfectly composed moments earlier might look like they’re auditioning for a role in a horror-comedy. And because the pictures capture genuine reactions rather than rehearsed poses, the results can be even better than the scares themselves.

With Halloween just days away, plenty of people are getting their costumes ready and planning a night of frightful fun.
For some, that means watching horror movies from behind a pillow. For others, it means heading to a haunted house with friends and discovering who talks a big game but screams at the sight of a plastic skeleton.
