Fringe 3.03 “The Plateau” Recap

Fringe 3.03 “The Plateau” RecapWhen they get there, they find out that this time it wasn’t fatal. The people involved in the accident are hurt, but still alive. Just as they’re about to dismiss it as a random accident, Olivia finds yet another ballpoint pen on the ground and realizes the chain of events isn’t over yet. Right after that, a man, who was crossing the street, is hit and killed by an ambulance. Olivia realizes that whoever is causing those events to happen is still there and she sees him on an overpass and runs after him. He realizes he’s been caught and takes the bike from a guy next to him and throws it down at the street. I have to say the guy is downright creepy. Olivia catches up with him and tells him to put his hand on his head. He winks at her and jumps, just as a van is passing by so he lands at the roof of the vehicle and escapes. Olivia is really surprised at how the guy knew that if he threw the bike down on the street, it would cause the van to slow down which would allow him to jump on it safely.

Cuts to crazy guy getting home, where his sister is waiting for him anxiously. His name is Milo and she tells him that they have been calling after him and that he should call them back and that he needs to follow the rules. He spurts out a lot of probabilities that don’t make any sense to me and she interrupts him by showing him a toy. He is surprised and avoids looking at it. His sister says that she didn’t want this to happen, that their mother had always said he shouldn’t do more than he could, but he ignores her and leaves.

Back at Headquarters, Olivia finds out that Jillian Foster was a consultant for Gregston Electric and the first victim, Cole Arnet, worked at Bryant Hospital dealing with neurological disorders. The connection between them is that Gregston Electric owns a subsidiary company called Ivan Medical Group, which is listed as one of Bryant Hospital’s outside vendors. With that information, FauxCharlie and Olivia go to the Hospital to talk to the Chief Medical Director. Once there, they immediately solve the mystery of the ballpoint pens. All the patients there use it. While they’re waiting for the director, Olivia sees Walter among the patients, but just like it happened previously with Peter, he vanishes before she can fully process it.

The Director arrives and tells them they’re not looking for a doctor; they’re looking for a patient. He shows them a video of subjects in a study they were conducting, which consisted of basically making people with cognitive deficiency smarter, so they could function more independently. Olivia recognizes the guy from the accident scene and the director is not surprised. Milo had come in with an IQ of 56, which meant severe cognitive deficiency. After they gave him the drugs, Milo’s mind became almost a machine and he was able to make calculations no one ever could. However, when the study was finished, the doctors had to put him back the way he was before, but he didn’t want that so he escaped. The victims were all related to Milo’s case and were involved in bringing him back to the hospital to reverse the process.

The director gives them Milo’s sister’s address and they go talk to her. She initially says that she doesn’t know where he is, but eventually reveals that he left her a letter saying where he would be in case she needed to reach him. Olivia and FauxCharlie go there, not knowing that Milo has already calculated the exact probabilities of Olivia’s demise. So he lets her see him and makes her chase him. He predicted that if he went through a construction site that had poor air quality, she would have to pull out her oxygen (standard procedure on the other universe) and that would slow her down, which would cause her to be right where lots of bricks would fall down and that would kill her. He didn’t count, however, that he was dealing with someone from another universe and couldn’t factor that in. Olivia didn’t pull out the oxygen and kept running. But when she finally caught him, she couldn’t breathe anymore. Luckily, FauxCharlie was behind her and gave her his oxygen and shot Milo’s leg when he was trying to escape.

Fringe 3.03 “The Plateau” RecapBack at the hospital, Olivia tells Milo’s sister that they tried to reverse the process, but it’s too late. Milo’s brain works in a way that no one could ever comprehend, except a machine. Olivia returns home and Frank — Fauxlivia’s really sweet and handsome boyfriend — is leaving for Texas for work. He tells her he can get someone to cover for him, but Olivia tells him she’s fine. While he goes answer the buzzer, Olivia sees Peter again and this time he talks to her. He tells her that she knows why she survived. Because she didn’t know the protocol. If she had stopped for oxygen, she would be that right now. That was the same reason she had seen Walter at the hospital and is seeing him now. That is happening because she’s not from this world and this isn’t her life. Olivia tells him he’s not real. He says that real is just a matter of perception; he is there and he’s the part of herself that she needs to hold on to because she can’t forget who she really is and where she’s from. He kisses her and disappears, leaving a really confused Olivia behind.

Oh, I like it. I really like where this season is going. It’s shaping up to be the best season yet.
