Five Things Movies Always Get Wrong about Twins

Movies tend to make twins out to be a lot different than they are in reality. There’s a very well-established mythos concerning twins that has been around for a long, long time. There’s even a sign in the zodiac for twins, Gemini, which means that twins have been something ingrained into humanity’s very culture since the dawn of human history. But the problem with this is that while a great deal is already known about twins the favorite tactic of Hollywood is to take what is considered to be junk science, rumor, and gossip, and make an entire movie about it while convincing people that such things are real and could possibly happen in the real world.

Twins are an amazing genetic occurrence, but that’s about all they are really.

5. There’s no such thing as a ‘good’ twin  and a ‘bad’ twin.

It’s not a foregone conclusion that one twin will go bad and the other will be a goody two-shoes. People’s personalities are complex things that are based more on their environment and the manner in which they’re raised than just being born as identical or fraternal twins. There’s no such thing as one twin going bad or staying good, it’s just a matter of how they interact with the world.

4. Identical twins are uncommon but not rare.

Fraternal twins tend to be a lot more common than identical twins but it is seen that identical twins account for about a third of twin births in the western regions. It’s usually something to see if you happen to find more than a few pairs of identical twins in the same location. The probability of having identical twins is so low that even those with the twin gene in their genetics wouldn’t be able to predict this.

3. The ‘twin pain’ is not a proven fact.

Some people report that this does in fact happen. It would be easy to simply think that coming from the same egg would afford such twins a deeper bond than most people since they’re part of the same organism to start with before they split, but once they become their own people that bond starts to slip just a bit. Most twins will never report feeling their sibling’s pain.

2. Twins aren’t always best friends.

It’s not like having a built-in playmate. Just because people are born twins doesn’t mean that they’re going to be best friends for the rest of their lives. No matter how alike they are some twins just can’t stand one another no matter how close they might be. Personalities are a big thing with anyone and with twins it’s no different. Their temperaments can be extremely different.

1. Twins don’t often have the same preferences.

Some folks might think that twins will like the same things and therefore be easy to please and even buy for come holidays. But the truth is that they will like whatever appeals to them and it could be wildly different things that showcase their different personalities. Just being a twin doesn’t mean that a person will be into the same things that their sibling is.

Twins are different people after all.
