The city of Gotham has its share of heroes and villains. When the bad guys come in to establish a stronghold from which to rain down terror on the locals, the heroes are bound to surface. It’s as though it operates by cause and effect with evil forces drawing the good so the battle can ensue. It’s almost a natural occurrence. Gotham was in flames until Penguin stepped in and took over. He struck a deal with the mayor and commissioner to cut crime in half and he did. He cut it by 57%, but only by outlawing crime without the issuance of a misconduct license from him, which entitled him to hefty profits. he took full control of the city and was wreaking havoc. In the premiere of the show, these are the things that we learned.
1. The cause for Batman’s rise
If there would not have been evil at work, then there would have been no need for Batman to appear. He only shows up when there is a job to be done. Gotham was on the edge of a crisis and the trouble served as a big red buzzer for the caped crusader. It was time for those of noble spirit and bravery to act. We learned that criminal activity is what activates the superhero to don a costume and jump into the fray.
2. Penguin’s ego will always get the better of him
Just when he was on top of Gotham and in the dictator’s seat, he let himself down. Penguin is famous for not playing his cards right and he proved it in the premiere when he left himself open to attack. The proud criminal believed that he was superior and that nobody could touch him. As he prepared to do some dirty dealing with the gang that operated without a license, an attack came from the place he would have least expected. He was sprayed with the fear chemical that turned him into a fearful and worthless mess. Would this signal the end of his reign of terror?
3. The Scarecrow is back in action
While Jonathan Crane was weakened under the influence of the fear chemical that his father created, the Scarecrow took over his body. Now he possesses the solution that makes people see their worst fears. He’s using it, but not for anything good. The fear that the solution made Jonathan Crane see, became a reality. It raises yet another question about the effects of the serum. Do the fears that people see now come true or was this an isolated incident?
4. Bruce and Selena need some distance
When Alfred is hospitalized, Selena makes a grand gesture and came to visit him. Bruce behaved rudely towards her and said things that he later regretted. The two can’t manage to stay on the same side for long, but the mutual attraction is obvious. Bruce apologized to Selena for his unkind words. She conceded that he was in fact a jerk. He told her that she looked lovely in her dress but she still wasn’t giving in.
5. The city officials are gutless politicians
While there are two sides to the issue at hand, both the mayor and commissioner caved to the whims of Penguin. It’s true that he did have them over a barrel at the time, but they didn’t put up much of a fight. Even Harvey has told Jim that they need to bid their time until the city is in better condition. He promised Jim that they would bust the Penguin when this happens. Jim is reluctantly going along with it.
