Attention all ocean lovers and fans of the aquatic realm. The new series “Big Pacific” is set to air on June 21, 2017. The PBS series is on track with the first four episodes that you can catch Wednesdays on PBS. The show captures footage of the many animals that live in the ocean, and presents some unusual adaptations that they’ve acquired in their evolution. There is a lot that we don’t understand about the vast oceanic environment. It’s more difficult to explore what lies on the sea floor than it is to make new discoveries on land. This leaves a vast expanse of unexplored territory with animals we’ve yet to identify. Here are five things that you should know about the new series “Big Pacific” narrated by Daniel Dae Kim.
You will see first time discoveries
According to the producer, John Cullum, the crew has captured footage of animals and their behaviors that have not previously been caught on film. While there have been documentaries of shark and whale behaviors, there are creatures that have just recently been identified. The first episode is appropriately titled “Mysterious” because that is precisely what the ocean represents. There are unknown elements that exist in the murky depths. The crew of “Big Pacific” has been working on their underwater adventures. Their goals have been to find educational and entertaining information as well as footage to share with us in their fact finding missions.
Prepare for a violent episode
The second show is titled “Violent.” This strongly suggests that we’re going to find out more about the feeding habits of ocean animals. We’ve seen this all before on “Wild Kingdom,” so the footage shouldn’t be too shocking. Just as on land, aquatic life is also equipped with various survival mechanism. While there are some creatures that feed on vegetation, the majority are in hunt of a meaty dinner. Viewers are going to find out more about the food chain as it exists in the sea.
“Voracious” explores the giant green anemone
The third episode explores how This oceanic wonder ingests food. While the majority of the time is spent waiting for ocean kill to float by, it is capable of capturing and devouring a live bird. The crew caught rare footage of a giant green voraciously feeding on a cormorant that came too close. The show goes further to explain the finer details of how anemones have flexible mouths that can expand the girth of their bodies. The digestion process begins immediately with this amazing creature.
Snakes are a part of the show
The series also includes the behaviors of animals on land. You’ll see footage of how snakes survive on an island where prey is minimal. The snakes adapt by capturing birds from the air. Watch for the episode that brings footage of an island with more than twenty thousand venomous snakes. The island is located in the Bohai Sea of China and it appropriately called “Snake Island.” If you have an interest in viper strikes then this episode will bring some amazing clips.
Episode five shows you how it’s done
This is a segment that you won’t want to miss. This show is called “The Making Of” and it hones in on the creative processes required to make the show. Filmmakers are followed as they explore the ocean for rare shots and footage. This shows viewers how difficult the making of the show is, but also how rewarding when a new discovery is made.
