Torrance Coombs is an American-Canadian actor who is best-known as Sebastian on The CW’s period drama Reign, which is about Mary, Queen of Scots. However, it is interesting to note that he has departed Reign for another period drama called Still Star Crossed, which is about what happens between the Montagues and the Capulets after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet in a fictional Verona.
Here are some things that you may or may not have known about Torrance Coombs:
He Plays Count Paris
This time, Coombs plays Count Paris, who people might remember as the man to whom Juliet was betrothed in Rome and Juliet before she decided to run off with Romeo. However, it is interesting to note that while Still Star Crossed follows its source material in the broad strokes, the finer details might not be what people remember. For example, Count Paris was killed in Romeo and Juliet, but in Still Star Crossed, he has managed to escape that fate, though he is still wounded and in the care of Lady Capulet. As a result, it seems probable that he will be sucked into the scheming on the period drama sometime soon.
He Played Thomas Culpeper
Reign was not the first time that Coombs has appeared in a period drama. For example, he played Thomas Culpepper on The Tudors, which was centered around Henry VIII of England as well as his six wives. Suffice to say that his character seduced one of Henry VIII’s wives, which did not end well for either one of them.
Is a Cat Lover
Coombs is a cat lover, as shown by the fact that he has not one but two rescue cats living with him in his home. One of the cats is named Renly for the third of the Baratheon brothers in A Song of Ice and Fire, who sought the Iron Throne on the basis of having the most soldiers through his affair with a son of House Tyrell as well as his marriage with a daughter of House Tyrell. The other cat is named Daenerys for the last heir of the exiled House Targaryen, who is best-known for being the first member of that family to hatch dragons in centuries.
Auditioned for Theater School on a Whim
As a child, Coombs acted in school plays, but he never thought that he would become an actor for a living. In fact, he auditioned for theater school on a whim and when he got in, he decided to just go with the flow instead of resisting. Had he not become an actor, Coombs has stated that he would have liked to have been either a teacher or a video game designer.
Would Want to Work with Bill Murray
When asked, Coombs has stated that if he could work with any actor, he would want to work with Bill Murray because of his ability to be funny while also being sad. With that said, Coombs has also stated that he would probably feel a bit intimidated in Murray’s presence because he gets the feeling that Murray is much smarter than him.
