Tom McCarthy is an award-winning director, writer, and actor that has been around since the early 90’s and even started out as a stand-up comic. He’s created several films, not all of them blockbusters but all of them works of heart that he has poured a lot of himself into. He’s the kind of person that wants to put as much of himself without actually putting himself into the scene. That can often make for a very neurotic and sometimes narcissistic individual that needs a reality check from time to time, but Tom is every down to earth and enjoys what he does without the added hubris that affects some folks.
He loves what he does and that’s what makes a lot of difference.
5. He makes movies to his liking and doesn’t worry about critics.
When his film The Cobbler came out it wasn’t exactly loved by critics but he didn’t let this faze him. He simply had fun making it and thought that it was a lot more meaningful than the critics wanted to allow for. Personally I saw the movie and thought it was something different for Adam Sandler, which was nice really since he wasn’t acting like a giant man-child any longer and showed some real emotion for once.
4. He was in a movie with another Tom McCarthy.
The movie was The Wire and it was released in 2002. Both he and the other Tom were billed as Tom McCarthy, but they aren’t related. It’s kind of odd to find someone with the same name as you but in this world it’s bound to happen at least once. The odds of this kind of thing happening though are astronomical at best.
3. He helped write Up.
He seems to have a thing for writing and directing hard luck stories since Up was starting out on a good note but went dark very quickly. If you remember correctly Ellie found out she couldn’t have kids first, which is hard for any woman to deal with. Then when they got older she passed away first and Carl was left all alone, without children and without anyone else in his life to care about. A good chunk of this movie was so depressing that a lot of people still claim that they can’t watch it unless they start nearly twenty minutes in.
2. He was the director for 13 Reasons Why.
Here’s another hard story that McCarthy had something to do with since it has to do with a young woman that commits suicide and leaves behind a series of tapes explaining why she did it and the role that several people played in her demise. It’s a very bleak story that doesn’t have a lot of happy moments.
1. He’s directed 3 actors to Oscar nominations.
I’m not sure if you can credit him fully but you can at least give him props for being able to tell the actors what they need to hear and how they were to complete his vision. Those actors are Mark Ruffalo, Richard Jenkins, and Rachel McAdams.
He’s a genuine person it sounds like, not just a talking head.
