The Stranglers are an English punk band that kind of revolutionized the genre and are one of the oldest bands that are still together today. They’ve gone through a few different band members as some people have left over the years for various reasons. But they’ve still managed to keep rocking and maintain a core group that is fairly solid and doesn’t have a lot of internal issues. They have their own style and way of doing things that doesn’t always seem to sit well with others but it’s managed to keep them together this long so something must be working.
If it’s not broken don’t fix it.
5. They originated in the UK punk scene.
In some ways they actually helped create and maintain the punk scene in the UK since their sound was so rough and didn’t really apologize or even compromise with the listeners. The audience had to listen or go away, and a lot of people stuck around to see just what the Stranglers would be come. Their fan base might not be quite as big as it used to be but a lot of people count them as favorites.
4. They rarely followed any one genre.
They took several types of music and kind of slammed it together to create their own sound. It seems to have worked for so long since they’re still here, but for those that aren’t used to their type of music it might seem a bit strange. Taking so many different genres and mixing them into one solid sound isn’t unusual but it is kind of hard to listen to if that’s not what a person is into.
3. Brian Duffy was older than the other members.
He was in his 30’s when he helped to start the band and was already a successful businessman. He had a fleet of ice cream trucks and was well of enough that he didn’t need the fame or money that would come out of the band. But sometimes you join bands for reasons that have nothing to do with fame and riches. It’s a great way to express yourself after all.
2. They had a very confrontational attitude towards the press.
It’s kind of understandable why some musicians wouldn’t get along with the press all that well, they tend to ask a lot of questions that might seem foolish or that the band just doesn’t want to answer. But part of living in the spotlight is that you have to let people know what’s going on with you if you want their interest. Being confrontational isn’t a good idea when it comes down to wanting people to know just who you are and what you’re about.
1. Their managers tried to break them up.
At one point their management team tried to break them up, stating that the band wasn’t working any longer and it was time for them to go their separate ways. Instead of that however the band decided to part ways with their managers.
Splitting up isn’t always the answer after all.
