It’s not exactly the fully-formed powerful voice it will be, but it has tons of character. That’s because Moriah Formica is still in her teens. Her voice is still young. But, her musicality is far beyond the average for her age. She’s captivating, and that’s only barely describing how moving her performances are. One can only imagine how her voice will mature as she continues to sing. She also has great rhythmic guitar stylings which merge effortlessly on point with her melodies and lyrics. Right now, she sings with a youthful breathy, resonant, strident, and articulate talent which does rock and roll proud.
Moriah wowed the audience and judges during her recent performance on The Voice. It was one of those moments when everyone knows that four chairs will turn around, and four celebrity judges will compete to coach an emerging voice. For Moriah, Miley Cyrus was first, followed rapidly by simultaneous button hits by Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton. Moriah’s pipes may be young, but, oh … does that girl have music pouring out of them.
Moriah felt that Blake knew she wouldn’t choose him.
She told radio celebrities on 107.7 WGNA that she chose Miley Cyrus rather as her The Voice coach because Miley is young, and because Miley tried the hardest to be chosen. Moriah truly feels that her work with Cyrus will help her in several ways. Moriah appreciates that Cyrus sings in all genres. Moriah believes that Cyrus will be able to help her incorporate those genres into a new singing style all her own. She hopes to develop a more modern sound with her musical style blended with other genres.
Aerosmith is Moriah’s all-time favorite band.
Moriah woke up every morning to her father playing 80s music. It was particularly intense on Saturdays. Her dad played That Metal Show, VH1, Head Banger’s Ball, and 80s pop-up videos. Her dad is the one who got her hooked on Motley Crew, Poison, and Aerosmith. She grew up on 80s music because her dad grew up on 80s music.
Moriah has created fun names for her bands.
They include: Mo’s Minions, Mo’s Mob, The Formicians, and The MoFos. Moriah’s favorite is The Mofos for a variety of reasons. She says everyone loves that one, too. She thinks it’s fitting because some of her friends already call her MoFo. It’s a favorite nick name. It’s also her initials, and it’s slang for friends, so she’s sold on it.
Moriah is a Merida Guitars artist.
She demonstrated her guitar technique playing her brand-new armrest cutaway guitar, the DG20-SPGACES Grand Auditorium, for a promotional video for the company. She was just fifteen at the time and a brand-new artist for the company. The guitar wasn’t available to the public at the time, but would be available a few weeks after her promo hit YouTube. She mentioned the Maple back and a solid spruce top, with built-in Fishman pick-ups. She described it has an awesome guitar with full-sounding chords that “make you want to play all the time”. She then launched into a great song.
Moriah got her start on guitar when her mom gave her Guitar Hero.
At Q103 Albany Radio, Moriah said she was five at the time, and it started her love for guitar. When she was nine, she started to sing. At fifteen, she started to perform at venues all around her home. She began performing as opening acts for more established personalities. From her first gig, things just took off as people began to hear her sing. It took some time to build her musical reputation, but people started hearing, and enjoying, her performances of her own original songs and covers of hits. Now, she’s booked all over the place.
